I was up in northern Ontario one unusually warm October back in the 1990s. The guy at the general store where I was buying gas said it was a bad sign ... because that typically meant there was a miserable winter ahead.

I found out later that the coldest temperatures the following winter weren't outlandish, but they lingered for a long time. The next year I was up there and the guy said it didn't get above -20 for something like six weeks.

“I saw it -30 one winter morning in Gunnison Colorado. It was cold.”

We stopped in Gunnison for the night, motel operator asked if we had plug-ins, so we hooked up. He told us to keep the dogs inside. The temps the previous evening had hit -60 and were expected to do it again. Told us a katabatic wind, starting up around Crested Butte, would start rolling down the valley as soon as the sun set, and it did. The next morning we waited until 10 to get started for the ranch. Temps hit -62 that night; a three dog night.
