Possible independent candidates for President scaring both parties
American Thinker ^ | 01/28/2019 | Rick Moran

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz appeared on 60 Minutes last night and proceeded to scare the bejesus out of the Democratic Party.

CBS:

I am seriously thinking of running for president.  I will run as a centrist independent, outside of the two-party system we're living at a most-fragile time not only the fact that this president is not qualified to be the president, but the fact that both parties are consistently not doing what's necessary on behalf of the American people and are engaged, every single day, in revenge politics.

What makes Democrats so skittish is that Schultz doesn't fit the mold of your typical far-left Democrat and would be attractive to several sorts of middle-of-the-road voters.  And, of course, he's got more money than King Midas.

Julián Castro, who is contemplating his own run in 2020 as a Democrat, was first out of the box to respond to Schultz.

Daily Caller:

"I have a concern that if he did run, that essentially, it would provide [President] Donald Trump with his best hope of getting re-elected," Julian Castro – a former Housing and Urban Development secretary under the Obama administration and a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate himself – said Sunday when asked by CNN about Schultz's possible run.  "I would suggest to Mr. Schultz to truly think about the negative impact that that might make."

The savvy political operative David Axelrod also weighed in on a Starbucks candidacy:

.@HowardSchultz running for POTUS as an independent would put the froth on @realDonaldTrump ‘s Cinnamon Dolce Latte, splitting the opposition and making Trump’s low ceiling potentially high enough.https://t.co/O6HsJAL8sP— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) January 21, 2019

ALSO NOTE THIS:

But what about disaffected Republicans? Media tycoon Michael Bloomberg has all but announced his candidacy. He says he will run as a Democrat, but in such a crowded field, he may feel he’s more competitive as an independent.

My quick take: the Starbucks guy would be trying to run as a center-left guy to appeal the the majority of regular people dems that don’t want the full on communism that most of their pols are embracing. He’d pull from them, not from Trump.

The guy who runs coffee shops is more qualified than the guy who develops real estate?

Damn you mean the democrats might have to deal with some of their own medicine? Actually I think he would take as many away from the GOP. Of he is seen as a sensible middle of the road pragmatist a lot of country club republicans would probably support him

Bring it! Axelrod’s lame metaphor notwithstanding, I think he’s correct. It could also more fundamentally split the party. Rats who are just moderately soft headed as opposed to bat crap crazy can’t be happy about their only choices being certified lunatics. It’ could be the Democrat Leadership Council redux. This election cycle, though, it would just fatally split their vite

Another big plus for the Starbucks guy is that he is doing everything the left says corporations should do and is the first business establishment to get a brick thrown through their window every time Antifa, BLMM or some other far left group goes on the rampage.

Hell, a lot of Country Club Republicans probably supported Hillary. Trump needs to keep pushing his numbers up with middle class/working class whites, latinos & blacks. The premise of ANY third party candidate at this point is solely to try to take out Trump. That being the purpose, that 3rd party bid would almost certainly hurt the Dem candidate more than Trump. (Trump has staked out a wide swath of pragmatic, middle ground, and no serious 3rd party candidate is likely to arise to the right of Trump).

How about the Woman who runs a “Charitable Foundation”?

Yup. He’d likely guarantee a Trump landslide in 2020.

Look for the full-on Leftard attacks against Starbucks to commence. I don’ think that outfit could survive a Lib boycott.

Almost nobody in the Trump coalition would bolt for this guy. He is a Dem-splitter only.

I don’t think lefties are physically capable of restraining themselves from buying Starbucks coffee. It’s a lifestyle to them, not a beverage.

I don’t think the majority of Rs are going to vote indie. The reason they did so for Perot in 1992 was because Bush was a very weak candidate.

Trump’s delivered on a lot of things for his base. I’m just waiting for him to hit the declass button.

Look for the Democrats to make ballot access just about impossible for this guy. The let it happen for Perot, because they know it was good for Democrats. It won’t be that easy for Schultz.

Most, if not all, anti-Trump Republicans are actually in congress. He has the most fervently loyal base. For any third party candidate to draw away Trump supporters, he'd have to be more Trump than Trump, and that person doesn't exist.

Mike Bloomberg appeals only to big government nannystaters who already despise Trump. He will draw not a single vote away from Trump.

Any third party candidate, any third party candidate, is great news for Trump.

The Left is already on a mission to destroy Schultz.
Kamala Harris is going to be the Dem nominee. She is giving the same Obama speeches, and has the same Obama handlers.

Agree with you fully.

What even “moderate” Republican would vote for the idiot who set up Sharpie messages on people’s drink cups saying “Let’s talk about race with you” and “Are you concerned about racism in our country?”. And asked barristas to get answers about racism by questioning the customers!

Plus the controversy over a lack of total subservience to black plotters who set up a guy to say he didn’t want to order but demanded to sit for hours.

Some candidate. A hero in his own egotistical mind.

Back room power democrats choose who’s going to run... they shove the ‘creepy porn lawyer’ types out of the way early. Who knows maybe the FBI filters through the files of the hopeful and gives the information to the DNC... hand and glove and all...

If Howard Schultz is thinking of running and he hasn’t been ‘talked to’ - it must mean the corrupt ones in the FBI don’t have any dirt on him. He should run.
