Forever stamps to jump to 55 cents, biggest increase in USPS history

The price of Forever stamps is increasing by 10 percent, and will go from 50 cents to 55 cents, according to a United States Postal Service press release.

The First-Class Mail Forever stamp price will take effect Jan. 27, the federal agency said. NBC Bay Area reports that the change is the biggest jump in the history of the USPS.

Although the price is increasing, old Forever stamps remain valid for mailing a letter regardless of how much the price changes.

The price change will offset a $4 billion loss the federal agency experienced in 2018. According to NBC Bay Area, USPS said sales from shipping and packages soared 10 percent last year but there was an overall decline in revenue due to rising pay and higher transportation costs.

The first Forever stamp was issued in 2007 for 41 cents. In November, USPS announced that dancer Gregory Hines, singer Marvin Gaye and a “Hearts Blossom” stamp would be added to the Forever collection for 2019.

Mark Steyn once said that Americans wanted all the benefits provided to citizens in Scandinavia without paying the same level of taxation. The USPS must provide services to everyone no matter where they live unlike a private company that can determine what is profitable or not. Compare the costs of FedEx and UPS services with the USPS.

I am not one of the bashers of the USPS. I have lived abroad for over 25 years in nine different countries. I have a frame of reference to compare services and costs. It has nothing to do with role models.

The Post Office needs to become a social media site.

There's no need for mail carriers anymore. All mail should be digitized and scanned to someone's email address (@postoffice.com). For packages, convert existing Post Offices for pickups.

My son, who works in computer industry in San Jose, builds computers for himself and friends—he is far from a Luddite ;)

He recommended having a separate off-line computer to keep financial records and anything else don’t want hacked...

You are actually very tech savvy ;)

The USPS is not funded by tax dollars. It relies on revenue from the sale of postage, products, and services. The problem is that Congress controls the purse strings and sets the policies.

Well, if you've read those articles in the press, I wouldn't believe a word of it.

They can't tell the truth anymore. It's all fake.

As far as I'm concerned they make everything up they put out nowadays.

Still, with postage going up to a record 55 cents, I suspect there will be less people mailing, not more.

I wish they would charge a dollar and eliminate the junk they put in my mailbox.

Hell, I should charge them half my recycling bill.

And then what? How are the elderly and those not in a city going to “ pick up” their packages? I love freepers complaining about the USPS while never themselves carrying mail in -20 degree weather or 95 degree heat and humidity all the while having every second of your day montitored by an electronic scanner that tracks your every move. Supervisor doesn’t even have to leave the office, just watch you on a computer screen all day. Can even tell you how fast you are driving. Nobody is getting paid double time on Sunday delivering amazon. The peons that are new hires making $15 an hour get to do that. And most of them quit or get fired before their 90 days are up. Go apply, they’re always hiring for that easy gubmint job.

Does anyone, ever, for any reason, still use stamps?

Are any of those Luddites here on Free Republic?

“I guess I’d feel better about the financial screwing I get from them if they looked at all like they appreciated having a job.”

I just wish they’d pay half my recycling bill, or quit putting garbage in my mailbox.

Went down to Tennessee to see the eclipse - got some free hotel stays from Holiday Inn because we agreed to sit through one of their time-share pitches. Apparently the business is still out there.

Made the wife swear to just keep saying “no” the whole time. First question guy asks “do you like to travel” and my wife blurts out “yes”. Took us about 4 hours to get out of there unscathed after that.

Of course not. The USPS doesn’t even make deliveries anymore.

When was the last time you saw a mail truck?

My wife’s HS boyfriend got a summer job with the USPS delivering mail with one of those sorry-a$$ed Jeep thingies. He did his route “too fast,” came in, asked for another route to do, and was told by the Union Rep. not to make waves. So every day, he did his route then went home, parked the Jeep behind his parents home and waited for the time to pass so he could go clock out.

Good, and important story my FRiend!

I have several others re government local and state 'workers'.

“I want total control over my own money.”

Online banking gives you total control. The bill pay applications only do what you tell them to do.

If you don’t want to pay the Sears bill, it will not be paid without your affirmative entry.

It’s an online checkbook. In form and function.

Still, there are those who fear that which is new and unknown. That’s the origin of ignorance.

There is nothing worse than a Luddite at the grocery store filling out a check, and the rigmarole that goes with it, while waiting in line behind them.

It’s laughable. And an inconvenience for everyone else.

And then what? How are the elderly and those not in a city going to “ pick up” their packages?

USPS could make arrangements for delivery like UPS and Fed Ex to those who are unable to make pick ups at a post office station.

I love freepers complaining about the USPS

My post was a complaint? No, it was actually bringing the USPS into the 21st century and away from delivering cheesy mailings, letters, and bills.

yes....I still use stamps but do most of my bill paying online...I pay bills thru the mail that are not common...like a dental bill, or my property tax, because I don't want to put infrequent bills on my online account...

then there are Christmas cards and Valentine's cards etc....

we put up a real Christmas tree too.

“The USPS must provide services to everyone no matter where they live unlike a private company that can determine what is profitable or not. Compare the costs of FedEx and UPS services with the USPS.”

First of all the USPS has provided these services for a long time now but more recently has been increasing their rates well beyond that of inflation. It probably has more to do with the benefits of the federal postal workers. FedEx and UPS doesn’t have to provide the same level health benefits.

And I have compared costs, it is typically cheaper to send a package with FedEx or UPS. Unless you use one of the post office’s flat rate services and have a very heavy package, they are usually more expensive.

And no I don’t believe Americans want free education or free healthcare, because we know it is anything but free. Trump would not have been elected if that was true.

Meant to just say benefits, not just health. Being able to retire at 56 - with health benefits - is probably the most costly part.

That’s no fun.

It’s better to open all the junk mail, then cram ALL of it into one of their return envelopes and send it right back to these annoying people.

“The USPS is not funded by tax dollars.”

Yeah, that’s the way it’s supposed to be. But with $4 billon annual deficits, I doubt that the taxpayers are not footing the bill. And anyway, if you buy stamps and use the USPS you ARE paying for it, crappy service and all.
