Forever stamps to jump to 55 cents, biggest increase in USPS history

The price of Forever stamps is increasing by 10 percent, and will go from 50 cents to 55 cents, according to a United States Postal Service press release.

The First-Class Mail Forever stamp price will take effect Jan. 27, the federal agency said. NBC Bay Area reports that the change is the biggest jump in the history of the USPS.

Although the price is increasing, old Forever stamps remain valid for mailing a letter regardless of how much the price changes.

The price change will offset a $4 billion loss the federal agency experienced in 2018. According to NBC Bay Area, USPS said sales from shipping and packages soared 10 percent last year but there was an overall decline in revenue due to rising pay and higher transportation costs.

The first Forever stamp was issued in 2007 for 41 cents. In November, USPS announced that dancer Gregory Hines, singer Marvin Gaye and a “Hearts Blossom” stamp would be added to the Forever collection for 2019.

If only I had bought a million forever stamps back in 2007, I’d have saved $140,000

Is Amazon still getting a sweetheart shipping rate? So good of us to subsidize Jeff Bezos.

I remember when they were 3 cents. Even adjusted for inflation they are much higher now.

I can't remember the last time I used a stamp.

I pay all of my bills online through my bank and send emails for any correspondence or communication.

Stamps will eventually go by the wayside like buggy whips and newspapers.

Still relatively cheap compared to postal rates in Europe.

Usually don't we get a few day or week warnings before these price increases so we can stock up before the increase goes into effect? I never heard one. SOBs!

I thought they were supposed to announce these rate increases in advance?

Well, maybe they did and I just wasn’t paying attention.

If I had known, I’d have invested too. Maybe a whole roll of a hundred.

What I’d really like to know, though, is why don’t they raise the price on junk mail? it must be the bulk of their business anymore, and no one appreciates having their mailbox crammed with that crap.

And are they still giving Bezos that sweet deal for carrying Amazon stuff for him, at a loss?

Hmm...., to think that in the 1950’s US post office stamps were 5 cents and airmail was 7 cents. News papers cost 5 cents, and comic books a dime.

So take it down. There is no requirement that you have one.

And to think, for decades a first class letter was 3 cents. No wit will be 55 cents. Sounds like they have cranked up them printing press and run off a few billion dollars.

They could put out a $1 stamp to fund the wall.

I don’t think we should compare ourselves to Europe. They’re not exactly the role model we need. And the libs are trying to get us there fast enough.

Agreed. I have no stamps and don’t remember the last time I used one, or where I got the stamp.

Count me as out of touch, but I've long believed the Postal Service was under charging for common stamps. They should have been at $.50 many years ago.

USPS is hobbled by its f’ked up management (your government.)
