This is splendid writing. I'm sending it to several of the guilty parties, including that offensive Catholic Bishop of Lexington KY, Bishop John Stowe, who said that the gross offensivenes of wearing MAGA hat explains it all.
Andrew Sullivan, on the other had, says the vicious irrational hatred exhibited by the MAGA-hat-haters has brought us to the brink of a civilizational extinction-level event.
Whew.
Comments, please.
Thank you for posting. A few things I disagreed with, but on the whole is a very pleasant surprise. Thankfully, he actually focuses more on the vile Black Israelies than the goofy Indian.
There was no hate on the kids’ side. It all came from the left and NeverTrumpers.
Sullivan writes well and he’s bang-on here.
Thanks for posting.
Not this part:
"Yes, they should not have been wearing MAGA hats to a pro-life march."
“Yes, they should not have been wearing MAGA hats to a pro-life march. They arent angels; theyre teenage boys.”
Why not...besides, they weren’t at the March.
Wouldn’t ending abortion “Make America Great Again?” It’d be a nice first step IMO.
I still don’t get why people claim its wrong to wear MAGA hats. That’s called free speech.
Unless you are trying to define populist conservatism as being more out of the mainstream than the Black Israelites. In which case you can go f*** yourself.
I’ve been around Indians all my life. I hate to say this but “Young Punchable Face” looks more like an Indian warrior than Uncle Tom Tom the wino.
“Liberal democracy is being dismantled before our eyes by all of us.”
Not quite white-hot right. The Left (not the right) has been ginning up the hatred for years. They’ve just about got us to CWII. Keep it up guys. My side is armed!
Why not?
VP Pence was there and President Donald J Trump addressed the march via video.
So why should the boys not been wearing the hats again?
They arent angels; theyre teenage boys.
Yes, of course. So once again they are partly to blame but that was just them being boys.
Let me guess, when Andrew shaves his chosen brand is Gillette.
I remember when Trigger meant the name of a horse,
not an excuse to relive one’s terrible twos.
If the Democrats in Congress could get away with passing a law to define wearing a MAGA hat as a hate crime, punishable by prison, they would do so in a heartbeat. The bishop of Lexington would applaud them for doing so.
Trump is a proxy. As the Kurt Schlichter article states, they hate "normals", and cultivate the weak minded in a virtual reality that helps insulate those weak minds from rational thought. You can see it Cortez' statement of "being morally correct instead of factually correct". Her statement was disturbing, because it brought to mind CS Lewis' comment about tyranny by those who engage in tyranny with the approval of a conscience convinced it is doing so because it is moral.
Occasionally now, you're seeing push back. The hiring of Lin Wood is one example. However, the apology by that Covington bishop was done to remove the immediate threat of a lawsuit, not because there was a moment of sanity.
I'm rambling, but have been thinking about what happens when the normals Schlichter talks about dont just view the Left (and all they entail) is not just misguided, or just need to be reasoned with, but are an existential threat? The Left certainly seems to be talking that way about "normals".
I often disagree with Sullivan and don’t usually read his stuff because I don’t get his publications. But he is a very bright and independent thinker as this piece proves.
Rather courageous of him, too.
The bishop of Lexington is (quick Sign of the Cross and looking confidently up to heaven) an ass.
I’m sending him this article.
I thought Sullivan, before he became “Gay Über Alles” was a fairly solid conservative.

LOL I noticed that also. Sullivan gets it mostly right in the article. I guess he felt compelled for some reason to say the MAGA hats were inappropriate (which they were NOT). And the title was ridiculous by saying it was hate versus hate which it was NOT. It was Leftist hate versus somewhat bemused/befuddled NON-HATEFUL kids who the Leftists targeted.
A generally fine article except for his nonsense saying the kids should not have been wearing the MAGA caps.
Those kids had every right to be where they were and every right to wear their MAGA caps. In a rational society, those so called adults, the Black Israelites and the drum beating Indian, would have been arrested for accosting a group of minors in a threatening and highly defamatory and insulting manner, and disturbing the peace.
And beating a drum right in someone’s face is an act of aggression and immensely rude.
The kids’ behavior was exemplary and the so called adults acted like the hate filled bigots and fools that they are. The language used by the Black Israelites alone should have gotten them removed from any public area.
