01.25.19 McConnell Supports Presidents Plan to Re-open the Government I was glad to see today the presidents announcement that he and Democrats have reached an agreement that will immediately re-open the government, while providing the room to negotiate a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. Further, negotiations on DHS will be prioritized over consideration of any other funding bills. And with cooperation, we can pass legislation opening the government and send the DHS appropriations bill to a conference with the House today. WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made the following remarks on the Senate floor regarding the need to secure our border and re-open the government:
For weeks, Ive stated that I wouldnt let the Senate become a theater for show votes and messaging stunts from either side. Wed only vote on plans that stood an actual chance of being signed by the president and thus becoming law.
So I was glad to see today the presidents announcement that he and Democrats have reached an agreement that will immediately re-open the government, while providing the room to negotiate a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security. Further, negotiations on DHS will be prioritized over consideration of any other funding bills. And with cooperation, we can pass legislation opening the government and send the DHS appropriations bill to a conference with the House today.
Im glad the closed portions of the federal government will re-open and get back online. Im glad that the dedicated men and women of the Coast Guard, law enforcement, the TSA, and all the other federal employees will not have to go longer without pay for their work, and will receive their back pay. I know the pain that this episode has caused to many Kentuckians and to people around the country. They deserve this resolution.
Going forward, I hope Democrats will stay true to the commitment they have stated constantly over the past weeks that once government was re-opened, they would be perfectly willing to negotiate in good faith on full-year government funding that would include a significant investment in urgently needed border security measures, including physical barriers.
After all, the only way that federal workers are going to have stability and certainty beyond the next three weeks, the only way our border is going to have real security, is if Democrats will stop playing partisan games and get serious about negotiating with the president on a long-term compromise. The days ahead will tell us whether my Democratic colleagues are actually serious about securing our nation; whether they actually mean what they say. The president called on the Senate to act on these proposals, and now that there is an agreement between Democrats and the White House, we can make that happen.
I was glad to see @POTUSs announcement that he and Democrats have reached an agreement that will immediately re-open the government, while providing the room to negotiate funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

I recall getting flak a bit ago that this was going to happen.
Ya, like the turtle had nothing to do with it. I’m sure the repubs were going to undercut Trump if Trump did not cave. Time for others to join me as an independent to create a new party.
Most didn’t want to think Trump would fold. But he did. Pelosi won this ROUND. But the war isn’t over. Hopefully he will now get to do a SOTU speech and win the war.
Kabuki. Who cares?
They aren’t going to get anywhere and he’s going to have to declare. The government will be open and it won’t matter anyway, since Trump is the one who fixed it and paychecks are coming in.
Before long Romney may go the way of McCain.
Ditch was not a party to the Party?
Does Red China approve?
Trump doesn’t fold. He repositions.
Supports it? Mitch arranged it! He put those two bills out so he could show Trump that the GOP is more likely to defect to the dem side than to stand firm with him.
McConnell is not a good manager. I think that when several (technically) GOPers defected and voted down the Senate bill, he realized that the game was lost. It was probably partially his fault, because he’s not good at enforcing party discipline, but also because of the fact that there are several serious RINOs in there and they can always be trusted to turn on their party.
I think Trump gave in to get the State of the Union speech. It will no doubt be a barn-burner of a speech. After that, probably executive order, because he still doesn’t have the votes.
The have just carved out their future as the Loyal Feckless Opposition for the next 50 years, more than likely.
Plus that second caravan is arriving JIT for the emergency declaration.
Well, we now know who is essential and who is nonessential.
McConnell should retire.
Of course he does, anything to delay having to face the issue with funding the border wall is a good idea to him.
“I think Trump gave in to get the State of the Union speech.”
well were all desperately looking for a silver lining. He could have had the SOTU in the Senate. Of course Mitch supports this surrender. I really don’t blame Trump he is on his own. With worthless worms like Mitch as your “ally” what chance do you have? That said, Trump could do much more to go on offense especially with the corrupt bastards at the DOJ.
