STATE DEPARTMENT The U.S. State Department ordered nonessential personnel to leave Venezuela, but is not closing its embassy in Caracas, the department said Thursday.
On Wednesday, Venezuela's disputed president Nicolas Maduro said he was ending diplomatic relations with the United States in response to President Donald Trump's announcement that the U.S. was officially recognizing National Assembly President Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader.
Maduro ordered U.S. diplomats to leave within 72 hours. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, however, said Maduro no longer has the authority to do so.
The U.S. State department said it was evacuating non-emergency staff for security reasons, and that U.S. citizens should "strongly consider" leaving the country.

We are a heartbeat away from civil war in Venezuela. There have been a lot of intense protests at our embassy.
Question of the day: Where are the carriers?
Noriega redo, anyone?
Next step, drop a JDAM on top of Maduro’s head.
Non essential personal, only government hires non essential personal
If you are non essential in the private sector, you get fired.
The United States has officially requested an open meeting of the UN Security Council for Saturday at 9am to discuss the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.
Pleasant to think that Maduro may be checking out like Saddam or Ceaucescu.
Didn’t Marcos in the Philippines have to run away too?
Marcos only “ran” when the military sided with the people. This time, the Vene military is still with the commie bastards. I know this because my sis-in-law is Filipina and on her mother’s side, is one “bad mofo” uncle who used to be Marcos cronies. He’s still there. XD
Military could go either way. It depends on the way the wind blows and the money/power flows.
There have been many like Sejanus.
Noriega redo, anyone?
Yes. Theres this little thingee called The Monroe Doctrine. Send Maduro packing, along with his props Russia, China, Iran, etc. Raus.
Executive secretaries are “non-essential” as are Vice Presidents. Shall we dispense with them too? Want to see how a CEO’s office would run without his exec sec?
Paralegals are non-essential, since only a licensed attorney is allowed to give legal counsel. But it’s the paralegal who actually does all the research work - not the attorney.
The fact is that anybody can be deemed “non-essential.”
I believe Colombia would allow airfield access.
JME_FAN - My sense is your comments are self-contradictory.
You’ve defined people (like Exec Secretaries and a VP) as “non-essential” but then you say the a company wouldn’t be able to run without an exec sec. So you’re saying they’re non-essential but they’re essential.
There... I’ve parsed the logic properly for you.
In gov’t, there are many non-essential employees who wouldn’t be missed.
I know a University employee in the “Women’s Studies” dept and she says her co-workers chat about 75% of the time.
Since there is ongoing regime change I have a fresh idea.
Let Department of State send Ocasio Cortez for Venezuela President.
Leftists like to say Socialism fails only because wrong people are in charge. With such an expert on Socialism it simply can’t go contrary to the ideal. If the test drive would be ok and Venezuela ends up a model successful socialist utopia fill of happy people at once you can kick the girl upstairs and let her do it in US.
Not earlier, please!
Hardly contradictory. My point is that people not intimately familiar with the real workings of an organization, typically the “bean counters,” are always looking for a reason to label somebody “non-essential.” There are many menial thankless jobs, done by those who are often looked down upon by elitists; but whose contributions, if suddenly lost, would cause very real disruptions in the organization’s ability to get things accomplished in an expedient manner.
I’ve worked in enough jobs to know where the real work gets done, and how rare are the occasions (if ever) when proper recognition is given to those who keep things running smoothly.
Basically, if your not a member of the inner circle, you are labeled “non-essential.” That is the reality.
Another example - all those assembly line workers, and others, who are now being replaced by AI robotics ... Are they too “non-essential? Were their jobs not necessary prior to the advent of artificial intelligence? Oh, but I suppose they are just disposable men to those who only look at titles and worship at the alter of technology.
Yes, the workers who are replaced by technology (e.g AI Robotics) are indeed, by definition, now non-essential.
Look up the economics term: “Creative destruction.”
It happens all the time in economic history and people in history adjust to it and reap the benefits of increased productivity. The Cotton Gin put a lot of people out of work because seeds could be separated from cotton with a machine. The automobile put blacksmiths out of business over time. Scanners in grocery checkout lines reduced the need to pay as many checkers. And so on.
Technology does displace people who WERE essential and now they are freed up to do other productive work and society continues to evolve. But this is another discussion...
“...and now they are freed up to do other productive work and society continues to evolve.”
Right, when they are 50 or 60 years of age, and nobody will hire them - and do not tell me how age discrimination is illegal, because it goes on everywhere and all the time. They gave their lives to a profession, a trade, a vocation. They are “displaced” by robots - not even humans. They cannot find work, they have skills, they have a good work ethic, they have a wife or themselves to support, they have obligations to creditors - but it matters not. They are the “expendables” - the “throw away people.” Evolve? You’d fit perfectly into Huxley’s Brave New World.
