Trump: I will deliver State of the Union 'when the shutdown is over
The Hill ^ | January 23, 2019 | MARY TYLER MARCH

President Trump said late Wednesday that he would deliver his State of the Union address after the ongoing partial government shutdown is over.

"As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address," Trump wrote in a tweet. "I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative - I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over."

Trump clarified earlier statements suggesting he may do an “alternative” State of the Union, writing that he was not seeking an alternative venue because "there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber."

"I look forward to giving a “great” State of the Union Address in the near future!" he added.

No, they care about causing pain to the plebes for the sake of the narrative.

They think we are stupid.

Read comment 90, note that you’re number 91, then laugh your ass off - as did I.

This would’ve been my preferred response as well.

Good. You need a “rest.”

“He’s already addressed the country twice on the case for the wall, and can do so again if he feels the need.”

I must admit, this decision perplexes me. My wife contends that giving the SOTU at a different venue would rationalize the refusal to cover the event by the main-stream media...much like they refused to broadcast his last address.
Unfortunately, people who watch the alphabet channels are the ones who need to hear his address.

You make some good points. I think one of the better ones is that he can’t very well say the state of the union is strong if there is an ongoing shut-down.

He didn’t dig too deep in saying he would look for an alternative to the SOTU report but he said this too early. Always something that could have been done better.

It’s all about 2020. POTUS wants the optics of Nazi sitting behind him while he talks about Angels Moms, the economy, etc. If he holds the SOTU elsewhere the Dems will just boycott.

Good point. I wish I could be confident that the dems in the house would act like adults and not orchestrate a walk-out, begin booing, or some perform an equally childish act during Our President’s address.

If Trump had asserted his power under the Constitution to convene both houses, the Dems would be catcalling and AOC would be leading a conga line up and down the aisles. Settle this issue and then do a SOTU.

That’s capitulating to a commie. This is disappointing.

It’s only Capitulation when Trump gives up on the Wall.

The SOTU is small potatoes.

Here’s your SOTU:

“The State of the Union is fine....NEXT!”

No, he won’t lose any support over this - except maybe a few low information supporters.

What exactly is the President giving up? He obviously doesn’t give a rats ass when he gives the SOTU address. In fact, he’s probably being advised that he’s better off giving it when the shutdown is behind us, so he can focus on good news and his positive accomplishments.

Meanwhile, Pelosi has badly embarrassed herself - revealing to the world that she was willing to disrupt a century old SOTU tradition in a childish fit of petty partisanship. So the President called her bluff and said he planned to give the address as scheduled - thereby casting doubts on whether she really had the authority, or political capital to stop him. This forced her to double down with even crazier threats - Democrats, including majority leader Hoyer broke ranks with her - and that’s about when she realized she had gotten herself into a classic no-win situation.

Now the President is letting her save face. If anything, he will wind up looking magnanimous for letting her off the hook. She owes him for this and she knows it. Plus, who cares about a stupid SOTU address?

Win win.

I like your take on this State of the Union controversy. This decision to delay the event was a surprise to me but it does make as much or more sense than all of the alternatives I have read so far. The Pres has made an INFORMED decision, in counsel with other members of his team. He does not put his ego ahead of the job at hand and is always putting America first. I have thought of a number of alternatives, plus and minus, and I accept the Pres Trump decision on the merits of his knowledge and end game desired results.

Is Puh-lousey gonna be made to step down as Speaker, on account of her crimes?

No, she will be deposed by the Hard-Left Marxist faction of the New Democrat Party. They will make Nancy Pelosi look like a sensible conservative. In fact they will claim that she was a secret member of the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy".

The future's so bright, we gotta wear shades.
