Future federal funding for a key nutritional program helping thousands of Alaskans in need remains in doubt due to the partial government shutdown, according to state authorities.
The state doesnt have any funds awaiting distribution under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program according to Shawnda OBrien, director of Alaska's Division of Public Assistance.
SNAPs latest disbursement, $12 million sent to about 33,000 Alaska households, was originally scheduled to be available by Feb. 1 but federal officials told the state to issue it prematurely, with the funds released Jan. 20.
They had to get the money out before the end of January, otherwise it wouldnt have been available, OBrien said.
Beyond this week, however, the state is still waiting to hear about funding for March and beyond of what SNAPs website under the U.S. Department of Agriculture deems the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net.
Unfortunately, thats pretty much where were at, OBrien said. Were waiting for further information.
Division staff are participating in regular nationwide teleconferences with USDA officials, hoping to hear word of any change in the programs status. OBrien commended program participants for not providing inaccurate details to SNAPs participants in Alaska.
Some states are experiencing situations where grocery stores are giving outdated information to people, OBrien said. So far weve done a pretty good job of communicating the information to our vendors.
Government workers will take all the free food they can get, before welfare recipients can.
Government workers getting such aid are disgusting.
Alaska Ping.
Women, Children, and Liquor Stores hardest hit
$363 per household per month? One could have steak every night on that budget. Add in the free school breakfast and lunch for the kids, and I’d have trouble getting it all spent each month.
Women, children, boyfriends, sisters, cousins, Whole Foods and other grocery stores hit hardest.
Gee, it wasn’t all that long ago that ‘hardy-hearty’ souls were moving to Alaska because they were ‘sharing’ the proceeds from resources etc to the citizenry.
Would be interesting to see the Fed STOP food stamps and turn it over to states.
Maybe then these idiots will ‘rethink’ Government check for all and amnesty and sanctuary for all illegals.
When the citizens of the states have to pony up for all these ‘extras’ they will more than likely make significant changes...
“Key Nutritional Program”
They make it sound like they are providing vitamin supplements or something. It’s millions of people who depend on government for their very existence. What could go wrong?
Per the SecAg, there is funding for SNAP through February. If states try to terrify recipients by screwing with existing funding, that’s on the states.
Did you mean the workers are disgusting or their getting aid is disgusting?
Ever hear of hunting and fishing like Sarah Palins family does? Or have the Eskimos forgotten how to do anything but swipe their EBT cards?
Yes, but part of the inflation is fueled by the fact that Alaskans all* get Free Money from the state.
fn: *all means those adult Alaskans who have lived in the state for a full calendar year.
Forget Walmart. Company with employees on food stamps and also with clients on food stamps....
We arent the most frugal family, but also not the most outlandish. Normal, I would say.
My family of 5 spends about 1000 per month on groceries up here. Alaska is expensive. We could eat nothing but cheap food all the time, but that isnt realistic.
In any case, I grew curious about the details of agricultural trading between Alaska and Canada and found the following website page:
Alaska-Canada Agricultural Trade
Interestingly, Alaska apparently exports limited amounts of rice, vegetables, and dried fruits to Canada while importing somewhat more dollar value in "food preparations" such as tea substitutes as well as milk and cream substitutes. Alaska also seems to import a fair amount of animal feed and live animals. Huh you learn something new every day. O_O
Damned shame, eh?
Healthiest food is not the most expensive food.
Your main food ingredient should be from the beans family. Those are high in protein, low in saturated fat and has good amounts of fiber.
Get rid of most red meat from your diet. In my opinion it increases risk of cancers such as prostate, breast, colon and lungs because it is high in saturated fats and cholesterol which causes additional problems like clogging your arteries and cause heart disease.
If you smoke, stop! That will save you enough to buy lot of vegetables, which should be your 2nd most frequent food after the beans.
DO not use refined white rice, use brown rice instead. And eat only whole grain breads and pasta.
Fish & chicken should be your other main source of protein.
If you follow these rules, you are going to save a ton on healthcare, which can’t be cheap in Alaska, either.
Fairly met.
.
Saturated fat is the most important element of your diet.
The nucleus of every cell is saturated fat. A lack of saturated fat will bring on dementia
Beans are loaded with enzyme inhibitors, which prevent the proper digestion of your food. Only sprouted beans are helpful as food.
Red meat is absolutely necessary for red blood cell production, and has absolutely nothing to do with cancers, which are caused by cronic inflammation, frequently resulting from polyunsaturated oils.
The Ad Council and your doctor are trying to kill you.
