Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and minority leader Chuck Schumer have agreed to a deal that could end the partial government shutdown, which entered its 32nd day Tuesday.
Under the deal, the Senate will vote Thursday on two bills intended to end the shutdown. One bill includes President Trumps request for $5.7 billion to construct a wall at the southern border, and one would fund the government entities affected by the shutdown through February 8, kicking the fight down the road until then.
People are saying isnt there a way out of this mess, isnt there a way to relieve the burden on the 800,000 federal workers not getting paid, isnt there a way to get government services open first and debate what we should do for border security later? Schumer said in announcing the deal. Well, now theres a way.
About 800,000 federal workers are currently missing their paychecks as a result of the shutdown, which has broken the record for the longest in U.S. history.
Earlier Tuesday, Schumer panned the presidents weekend proposal to end the shutdown, which included restrictions on the ability of immigrants to claim asylum.

Will Republicans win the dueling bills battle or will our side turn on Trump and support the Schumer bill?

What a bonehead move...force them to fillibuster...it’s a layup...
“force them to fillibuster...its a layup”
Correct.
And there might be a few Dims that will vote for the $5.7bil for the wall...breaking their “solid blue wall”.
Which would be a enormous political defeat for Dims.
Then, 100 Republicans in the House sign a discharge petition to vote on that bill forcing a floor vote in the House.
I don’t think Nancy can keep 30 of her own caucus from voting for it.
They did this on purpose. They don’t support Trump. If Trump stays strong and vetos the house bill (it will easily pass the Senate) and makes a lot of noise as to why he will still win this....He must Veto the bill!
It has been a week or so since the last Panic Attack people are sloughing off.
AGREED!
MM is doing nothing like that. Next up 50+ new judges. He will be one of the most effective and productive majority leader since Lyin’ Lyndon.

Senate leaders are irrelevant.
Don’t waste time.
Only two people matter, Trump and Pelosi.
Vindictive tyrant Pelosi refuses to come to the table to negotiate causing a government shut down....Then she tried to following Pompeos tracks to undo negotiations if possible like Obama and Kerry did after Trumps visit abroad. She gets grounded and now closes the doors for SOTU.
Further she’s demanding a pathway to citizenship or permanent legal status to “dreamers”.....(think of the caravan dreamers on the way)
“McConnell allowing a vote to fund government through Feb 8th...”
That’s what going to happen. It will allow the idle workers to get paid.
Same thing Congress always does. Push the problem down the road.
Assume both bills pass. The House can then pass the funding government bill, but defeat the wall funding bill. What was accomplished?
WALL OR NO DEAL
But the Senate has been doing this since Daniel Webster.
That’s a lot of precedence!
They take house appropriation bill and amend it, which the Constitution says they can.
I wouldn’t mind having a court look into it though. Seems more limiting of the House’s power than intended.
No.
Chucky has omly agreed not to filibuster starting debate on a ‘wall bill’- but not ending debate.
Gotta end debate before there can be a vote.
(Sorry, my mouse is acting up and I can’t ‘cut and paste’)
The spending bill starts in the House and then moves over to the Senate after a House vote. Schumer apparently has worked out the framework of a deal for the Senate to approve what the House has or will have already voted on.
What about The House?
What should we call the new party? The “Constitutional” Party sound good to me.
