So, could this shutdown end up hurting Democrats again? Both sides are not budging. The partisan divide on immigration is the equivalent of the width of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans combined. President Trump is trying to make good on his promise to secure the border, a key campaign promise. The Democrats, wanting to take their new House majority for a spin, are not playing ball. They were elected to block and fight this administration. Theyre not giving one-cent. President Trump recently offered a deal to break the logjam. A three-year extension to DACA recipients, plus more protections to those with Temporary Protected Status in exchange for part of his border wall projected to cost around $5.7 billion. Democrats have rejected the deal outright. They have no counteroffer. And if Democrats come up with one, itll be straight trash. The Democratic Party is more concerned with scoring points than re-opening the government. They say they want to negotiate, but have nothing to offer.
Trump has to deliver on something regarding the wall, he based his 2016 campaign on border security. Democrats cant cave on a key Trump initiative at the outset of their new House majority. And Trump cant cave to House Democrats. There is no end in sight, but can Democrats get a face full of buckshot in this fight? Yes, Trump and the GOP are being blamed more because what else is new. But voters agree that there is a border crisis, and support for the wall has risen. With the government shutdown, you have Speaker Pelosi screwing around with the State of the Union, virtually disinviting Trump over nonsensical security concerns and her party absconded to Puerto Rico during the shutdown. So, spare me the those poor government workers lectures from the Left; they dont care about them. RealClearPolitics Tom Bevan said last week that Democratic intransigence could bite them in the end. And while this deal offered by Trump isnt the best, and certainly not warmly received by his camp, its at least something to go on for future negotiations.
Then again, both sides see their side winning in the polls. Democrats see the blame portion, while the GOP and Trump see how voters back border security. As this drags on, well see who gets torched:
People are in favor of border security. People also don't want the government shutdown. Polling right now shows that people are holding Trump responsible but I think Democrats are starting to run the risk of intransigence. Not even showing up to bargain at all and even arrogance, being on junkets in Puerto Rico while the government is shut down. That's not a good look for Democrats and that may end up hurting them in the long run if this continues to go on. Trump still has a national emergency in his back pocket, he may use it if it gets to the point where he has no other options because he just can't capitulate.
At this point I say Trump should do whatever it takes to get them to riot and then turn the tanks on them.
I’m so damn tired of this crap that I’m only half joking.
The same reason they caved on ending Obamacare after they all campaigned on it. They're liars and cowards.
I saw that earlier. What does it have to do with getting rid of unnecessary furloughed gubmint workers?
Let them go find a real job.
It was a big one to me.
The house passed it, they couldnt get 10 dem votes in the senate
The most recent credit went out early - now weeks ago. Now, they're following it up with reminder messages to BUDGET the funds, not just blow them because they arrived early.

But seriously president Trump has the upper hand because he has an avenue to accomplish his pledge to secure the border in the form of a wall - via declaring a state of emergency.
Maybe I'm looking at this wrong but it seems like the longer this goes on the more it causes problems for the Democrats.
Build the wall - its now or never
Major league swamp-draining if that happened!
They throw it at everything else. But they finally found something that spending money on wont bring back a return in votes.
Or...$1 out of every $1000 of government spending...
Saw the same thing in PA. February Benefits were going to be applied to cards on the 20th of January. This was a notice from a local charity warning users not to spend all of the money because there would be no more in February.
Guessing there will be lots of shrimp, steak and lobster sold at the end of this month and sob stories at the end of February of how receipients have run out of funds.
Why didnt the republicans get it done when they had majorities in both houses?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They passed the Secure Fence Act in 2006 when they had majorities in both houses.
Where’s the fence?
They defunded it after we refused them amnesty.
Since the Republican base responded by primarying a large part of those who were the logjam on the Republican side, that would be an entirely nonsensical question.
That is why even democrats aren’t asking it.
I saw that too. But eventually the money will run out. And the gvt, if it’s smart(?), will figure out a way to continue pmts. There will be hell to pay if they don’t.
sorry...I didn’t see where you used the word unnecessary in your post.
