Washington (CNN) -- Over the past few days, the political gridlock that's led to the longest government shutdown in US history has devolved into a tit-for-tat between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Pelosi all but disinvited Trump from giving the State of the Union address in the House chamber, initially citing security concerns and suggesting the President wait until the shutdown was over. On Thursday, Trump hit back and canceled Pelosi's undisclosed plan to visit US troops in Afghanistan along with a congressional delegation, effectively blowing the cover for what is normally a secret trip.
Here's a look at the factors surrounding Trump's move to keep Pelosi and other lawmakers from using military transport during the shutdown.
Does this have anything to do with the shutdown?
Not directly. The Department of Defense has been fully funded since September and the trip would not necessarily require furloughed employees affected by the shutdown to come along.
In his letter, Trump argued that the trip would prevent Pelosi from entering negotiations to end the shutdown. (It should be noted that the President visited Iraq in late December during the shutdown.)
Is Trump allowed to do this?
Pretty much. When it comes to military airlift support for congressional delegations (CODEL) the assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs -- with a few exceptions -- has to sign off. But, the president can, as we have seen, intervene and deny the request since, as commander in chief, he has authority over the military.

... Trump ... canceled Pelosi's undisclosed plan to visit ...
Typical misinformation from the media.
According to the letter POTUS sent Pelosi. Trump did NOT cancel her trip; he cancelled her use of government air transportation. In the letter he stated she could fly commercial, meaning she could pay for her own trip and transporation.

There is an old expression that fits here, “That its better to be pi$$ed off than pi$$ed on”. San Fran Nan looks like she’s experiencing both.

The liberal media is all upset that Pelosi can’t get military planes to carry her and her 5 tons of baggage on her personal trip to the E.U. and the Middle East, during a government shutdown which Democrats created, to do what? They won’t even speculate.

"In his letter, Trump argued that the trip would prevent Pelosi from entering negotiations to end the shutdown. (It should be noted that the President visited Iraq in late December during the shutdown.)"
Perfect example of how dishonest the Mediascum gets in its "fact checking".... the two items are not remotely comparable. (1) for the Dec. trip, it was a very quick trip over the CHRISTMAS holiday when Pelosi was already out of DC and in HAWAII vacationing. POTUS Trump zooming off to Iraq and back had no possible effect on any imminent "negotiations" with the Pelosicrats, since he was back in DC while Pelosi was still lounging on Hawaiian beaches. (2) for the current Pelosi issue, she would have been leaving DC for a WEEK, at great public expense, while Trump is there in DC trying and waiting to get the govt impasse resolved. (1) and (2) are extremely dissimilar situations, but CNNtards try to make it seem as though they are the same.

“effectively blowing the cover for what is normally a secret trip.”
If there is no trip, there's no need for cover.

Without Pelosi, there is no negotiating. She planned to go AWOL, but notice she's not going now. Peurto Rico and Pelosi have made the Dems look bad lately.
Oh and the Socialists taking about 70% taxes and abolishing the Electoral College etc. makes them look even more out of touch.

I understand there were 93 — that’s NINETY-THREE — people going and only 7 were legislators. Heard that included Pelosi’s children and grandchildren.
She’s whining that Trump jeopardized her security by exposing the trip. No; she’s mad because Trump let the sunshine in so that Americans understood how she abuses power and wastes taxpayers’ money. So within the last month she’s partied in Hawaii, partied in Puerto Rico, and God-only-knows-where she was planning to party this trip. Afghanistan? Brussels? Doubtful — but that’s her story and she’s sticking with it.

Keep posting lying CNN articles because after 25,000 leftist articles posted here, some still might not know what they're all about.☺
For all of you who cut their stinking cable to get away from the endless lies from CNN et al, only to have it shoved in your face here non-stop, my sincere sympathies.
