Katelyn Ohashi did three backflips, landed into a split and got back up to end her floor routine as though it was easy.
Then the crowd went wild as the University of California, Los Angeles, senior gymnast stood there smiling.

I am always impressed by gymnastic excellence. But even excellence can seem routine until something new comes along. This is one of those events.

Gymnastics, fine, but could do without the cutesy dance moves. Next year they’ll be twerking.

Unfortunately dance elements are scored as part of the routines. Has been for years. She has no choice but to add cutesy dance moves.

She was on the US Olympic national team at age 12-13, then had severe back injuries. Decided after recovery to focus on college gymnastics instead of national olympic gymnastics. She beat Gabby Douglas who was the 2012 All Around champion at the olympics before she retired from national competitions due to injury.

That's what I thought. And there seemed to me
more dance than gymnastics, proportionally.
But, that said, when she actually did gymnastics it was very impressive.

I don't follow gymnastics habitually, just when something turns up. But, I found it interesting that this gal is not the usual 88 lb pixie we expect to see during the Olympics.

She was on the news last night talking about how she endured a lot of body shaming in high school because she was not the usual 85 lb pixie. She basically was saying eff you all who made fun of me! It was awesome!

When you think of the daily routine she does to handle those split landings and the ones she does on the balance beam, I can understand the quads. I think along with the hips, they might be considerable larger without the physical training.
