Last week, a 25-year-old woman was standing at a bus stop before dawn in the Fernwood neighborhood on Chicagos Far South Side when she was approached by a teen who attempted to rob her with a gun. Instead, the woman, a concealed carry permit holder, pulled out her own gun and shot and killed the 19-year-old.
On its face, this story may seem to make the case for the merits of concealed carry as a method of self-protection, especially for people living in high-crime neighborhoods. But the fact is that this scenario is an outlier. It is extremely rare for a legal gun owner to use a gun successfully in self-defense.
A 2015 Harvard study analyzing data from the National Crime Victimization Surveys found that self-defense gun use is rare victims use guns in less than 1 percent of contact crimes. That same year, there were more than 9,000 criminal homicides involving a gun, compared with just 265 justifiable homicides involving a private citizen using a firearm, according to the Violence Policy Center. This amounts to about 34 criminal homicides for every one justifiable homicide involving a gun.

Yes but it is a real fell good story
Actually black on black crime can only be discussed by liberal black people. to do otherwise is considered racism or cultural appropriation or something.
Depends on perspective. I feel safer carrying but I am sure a potential attacker would not.
That is not what history shows.
The rarity is irrelevant. It is extremely rare for anyone to be saved by their seatbelt, or the airbag in a car. It is extremely rare for anyone to use a fire escape. It is extremely rare for anyone to need the emergency lights to see how to get out of a building. It is extremely rare for a sprinkler system to activate to put out a fire.
Would any sane person suggest that we don't need seatbelts, airbags, fire escapes, emergency lighting, or fire sprinkler systems?
As to the successfully part, armed citizens have a very good chance of succeeding in their defense when they determine it is necessary to use their weapon.
Typical nonsense from a clueless liberal.
Give us a chance and we’ll even up the odds eventually. One criminal taken out will probably prevent a dozen or more crimes from being perpetrated by that individual in the future.
Ignoratio elenchi, Nina E. Vinik. How typical. None of your arguments support your claim. Try choosing a topic befitting the hen house.
That said, people who carry legally should train without ceasing. Continuing education and physical practice should never end. School is never out. Become the best. Become the American model of great competence, even temperament and integrity unsurpassed elsewhere on the planet.
