As is tradition, President Trump hosted the champions of college football, the Clemson Tigers, for a celebration of their athletic achievement at the White House on Monday.
The food he offered them was far less traditional.
Piles of burgers and fish sandwiches from McDonalds, Wendys and Burger King, still in their boxes and wrappers, were served on trays in the candlelit dining room. Tubs of dipping sauces were stacked in silver gravy boats. On another table, heat lamps kept French fries and Dominos pizzas warm. Salads were available, too.
It was an opulent setting for fast-food fare. Visiting players are typically offered a meal from the White House kitchen, but Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mr. Trumps press secretary, said the government shutdown necessitated a new menu.
Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed so the president is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyones favorite fast foods, she said.
The substitution didnt seem to bother Mr. Trump, and perhaps even delighted him.
I like it all, he told reporters before the players arrived. Its all good stuff. Great American food.
Hes far from alone in loving fast food. About one-third of American adults eat fast food on any given day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Still, the sight of the fast-food cartons inside the stately White House dining room struck some observers on social media as incongruous or lacking in hospitality for a celebration. (No players looked particularly dissatisfied as cameras rolled.)

I always have liked fast food. To coin a cliche, it doesn’t love me.
Comfort food. What’s not to like?
The famous Mrs. Nesbitt - FDR’s nemesis. She was the cook and housekeeper who served up bland food to the likes of Churchill. She wrote a delightful memoir of working in the White House.
Just a little too American (ie: a little too common) to suit leftists who expect imported caviar, pâté, sushi, Wagyu beef and champagne at their free lunches.
When the taxpayers and lobbyists are paying lefties expect the very best.
Try Ribs USA over on Olive st. in Burbank ( cross street Buena Vista ) - one the very best burgers in L.A.
I know that place but never got in because of the stupid parking around it. I’m not paying $2o for a burger am I?
Essential for some reason.
Jobs like that should be the first to get the chop.
Nah, I get the lunch special combo for 8.99 - ton of food
classy response mr. chavis.
President Trump making lemonade.
chick fil a would have been more mind blowing for the dems, but the Pres is still winning.
bigly macly.
Uh, when I was in High School, not matter what the sport, the tradition was that if you won a road game you got to stop at McDonalds on the way back to school after the game. At least thats the way we did it. And we loved it.
I hope they have some way to heat that stuff up....
My thoughts too, they stay warm for about 2 minutes.
There is one sorta near me..now I have to go there and get a sundae, but its raining outside so will just go a different day..In and Out is GREAT..LOVE their burgers and fries, but they dont have onion rings which is a shame. I used to go to Johnny Rockets but their service has dropped in the past few months(Especially the one near my house) prices are up and they give you less onion rings :( there is also the Burger Lounge, Organic meat, pretty good too but they dont give enough meat..no Tommys around me but they have a few Fatburgers, never had them though
American food. All good stuff. Our President likes it all. :).
The highlight of my (thankfully) very short career in the hospitality industry at a regional sit-down burger joint was when a bus would show up. Whether they were the winners or losers, the kids looked forward to that stop more than the game in some cases and everyone had a great time, including the workers. Fast food and sports are part of the great all American tradition Trump is fighting for.
That was just a political stunt to show that Roosevelts and British royalty were just aw-shucks plain folks just like the great unwashed.
Kudos to President Trump for handling the Clemson visit with humanity and good humor. I bet they had a blast.
“Why is the Centers for DISEASE Control and Prevention involved in keeping tabs of fast food?”
Well, that ebola, drug-resistant TB, MRSA, and all the other gifts imported from the turd world is scary. Also fraught with political danger.
They had been put under heating lamps.
