Ah, the old "If it saves ONE LIFE" argument.
You can ban everything using that argument.

Beside the obvious unlawful search and seizure issues, this would destroy the new car market.

How about we restore the death penalty for murderers like this guy in Wisconsin who kidnapped the young girl after killing her parents? Let’s use the same argument...”If it saves a single life...”

Do it, please do it Dingell! I can rig up a device that will circumvent it and sell them for great money. Think of all the other like minded folk that would buy it just because they don’t want to have to blow in a tube some other guy did just before them.
Renting a car? Buy my puffer with CO2 injector for $59.99 with *free* shipping and you won’t have to put your mouth on that filthy thing again.
Fortunes to be made folks.

If it was a practical item that works well, and if it could be attached only to the cars driven by people convicted of a DUI as an after market device, then it might be a lifesaver. Otherwise, it needlessly raises the price of new cars which are already exceedingly high.

An acquaintance had an IID (Ignition Interlock Device ) installed in his car because of a DUI. 2 problems with requiring everyone to use them are:
1.) They have a warm-up time. This is a pain in moderate climates, in cold weather it can be a while.
2.)The require regular maintenance calibration. You want to have to go to the station every three months and pay for the priviledge?

Remember the seat belt system that prevented you from starting the car if you weren’t buckled? Remember how that worked?
The people who voted for that should have been hung publicly. Same goes for those who propose this “breathalyzer.”

There’s a system that can work through skin contact via the steering wheel that’s effective and not intrusive.
That’s not the one they’d choose to make required. As such, this is stupid.
If it doesn’t test for everything that could impair, then why do it?
