Presidents Have Declared 58 States of Emergency Since 1979. 31 Are Ongoing

While it’s uncertain whether President Donald Trump will declare a national state of emergency, doing so wouldn’t be unprecedented, as the U.S. still operates under 31 such orders.

Whether his actions would be warranted, or legal, is also hotly debated.

Trump renewed his threat Thursday, saying he would almost “definitely” declare a national state of emergency if a deal isn’t reached with Democrats in Congress to end a stalemate over funding a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The federal government shutdown caused by the dispute is now in its 20th day.

“If this doesn’t work out, probably I will do it,” he said in comments to reporters before leaving the White House for a trip to the border.

Trump made the same threat over the weekend.

Invoking a state of emergency effectively enhances the president’s executive powers by creating exceptions to the usual rule of law. This authority is intended for the president to quickly respond to matters deemed a public threat. In such times, ordinary laws and civil protections no longer apply.

The New York Times described Trump using his emergency authority to build a border wall as an “extraordinarily aggressive move,” adding that it would be, “at a minimum, a violation of constitutional norms.”

Much precedent for a possible declaration of National Emergency, but since it's the 'Evil' President Trump, there's gnashing of teeth and wailing by the usual suspects.

If those 31 are still ongoing the language in the presidential findings and determinations will offer a plethora of unexpected options to be exercised. IOW the POTUS could have unbelievable powers available.

He has the Constitution for authority. Article 2 and Article 4 section 4, the latter which compels him to protect the states from invasion.

Drop the hammer and build the fargin wall, Mr. President.

States have every right to prevent invasion as well. They have also chosen not to defend their residents. Tx, NM, Az etc have all failed to protect themselves and keep illegals out.

Fortune declares the following quote from this article is from ‘The Atlantic’.

“But if the president declares a state of emergency, “More is at stake here than the outcome of one or even two elections,” reports the Atlantic. “Trump has long signaled his disdain for the concepts of limited presidential power and democratic rule.””

Curious why a reasonably....say objective magazine would even quote something from ‘The Atlantic’?

I vaguely recall a few incidents. Usual story seems to be corruptocrats move money into America and start hiring lobbyists, which prompts their rivals or victims back home to press the US government to rein in the miscreants.

I’m sure some of the ‘emergencies’ are from the Deep State picking sides in foreign disputes.

AZ tried to. Obama dropped the hammer on them and took them the SC. Roberts and Kennedy sided with the rats.

If only!

National emergency declarations are pretty much copy and paste from previous ones. The major changes are in the ‘Annex’, which specifies the exact entities involved.

Here’s an example from a year ago December:

Trump should do an E-Order that both blocks and confiscates money from human and drug trafficking and direct it toward improving border security.

Maybe a tax on all money transfers to Latin American countries and a stiff fine for companies employing illegals using forged or stolen documents.

Start busting heads and wallets so than self-deporting becomes a thing.
