Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked a move by Senate Democrats on Thursday to get the chamber to vote on spending bills to reopen the government on day 20 of the ongoing partial shutdown.
In a back-and-forth on the Senate floor, Senate Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, on Thursday called for the Senate to take up legislation advanced by House Democrats to reopen shuttered parts of the federal government and argued that parts of the federal government not related to the border wall should be re-opened immediately as negotiations continue over the border wall, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell objected to the move, saying that "political stunts are not going to get us anywhere."
McConnell has made clear that he won't take up any legislation related to the shutdown in the Senate that President Donald Trump won't sign. And the President has dug in in his refusal to sign legislation that does not meet his demand for roughly $5 billion for a border wall, which Democrats refuse to provide. "The last thing we need to do right now is trade pointless -- absolutely pointless -- show votes back and forth across the aisle," McConnell said on the floor. He added, "The political stunts are not going to get us anywhere." McConnell instead blamed Democrats for the impasse, saying that the shutdown has been "prolonged by my Democratic colleagues' refusal to even come to the table."
But the effort is a way for Senate Democrats to put pressure on Senate Republicans amid the ongoing government shutdown and highlight the legislation passed by the new House Democratic majority to reopen government.
Schumer argued that Senate Republicans must take action even if the President remains entrenched in his position.

One thing The Turtle is not is politically stupid.
If they end the shutdown by overriding Trump’s veto it will trigger the self-destruct sequence of the Republican Party.
Not something he wants.
Ah-HA! Good take.
OMG! could it be true that the Turtle has found a spine?
*****************************
and found some balls?
Maybe Trump loaned him a couple from his seemingly endless supply.
Trump could re-write that thing Rush says to something like - “I get more done before lunchtime on Monday, even with half my balls out on loan, than Bath-house Barry ever got done in a week.”
Democrats are still the party of no.
No wall.
No border security.
No cooperation with President Trump.
FUCNN
Like you said in the White House presser......Elections have consiquences.....right Chuckie baby?
A veto shows McConnell doesn’t have as much power as he pretends to have.
Integrity can be ascribed to any career politician. All virtues and vices bow to self-interest for career politicians. From that lens, the actions of any legislative body follow a perfect logic such that any disillusioned teenager could follow it.
If the House has actually passed a bill to re-open the treasury department, they should pass that and send it to Trump.
But have they, or did they pass a bill opening up everything?
“OMG! could it be true that the Turtle has found a spine?”
He also had it regarding Merrick, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh.
His problem is that he has a bunch of nursery school kids he needs to keep rounded up.
Build the mookabooking WALL or keep it shut, Forever.
Might have to start calling him Tortoise.
Mitch finally did something “RIGHT”.
My gosh...the Senate Republicans are getting a backbone. Lindsey Graham said that President Trump should declare an emergency to build the wall and McConnell is telling Schumer that he is running the Senate.
Good for Mitch McConnell ...
Replace furloughed government workers with illegals for ten bucks an hour. Show ‘em how it feels.
No say around 5 an hour. The federal minimum wage is still 7.25 an hour.
Scummer and Pelousi refuse to support viable budget bills.
Never forget, he delivered on Kavanaugh.
I’ve heard the Pres is looking for a way to divert funds from Puerto Rico to build the wall.
Good job, Mitch.
Credit where it’s due.
Good idea - five bucks and hour works...
