As a proposal to oust a Tarrant County Republican Party leader because hes Muslim looms Thursday night, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott stressed that the promise of freedom of religion is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
Abbotts comments come as Tarrant Republican precinct chairmen are scheduled to vote on whether to keep Shahid Shafi, a Muslim, as one of the partys vice chairmen.
The promise of freedom of religion is guaranteed by the first amendment in the Constitution; and Article 1, Section 4 of the Texas Constitution states that no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust in this state, the governor said in a statement.
Religious freedom is at the core of who we are as a nation and state, and attacks on Dr. Shafi because of his faith are contrary to this guiding principle.
Abbott is the latest state official to weigh in on the proposal that appears to be dividing the Tarrant County Republican Party.
At issue is an effort that began months ago when a group of members began pushing to remove Shafi from the post of vice chairman.
Precinct Chairwoman Dorrie OBrien asked for Shafis appointment to be reconsidered because hes Muslim and the issue ramped up and expanded after the Nov. 6 election, which saw Tarrant County turn blue in the U.S. Senate race.
She and others behind the move to oust Shafi, a surgeon and Southlake City Council member, say this is not about religion but whether Shafi is loyal to Islam and Islamic law or connected to Islamic terror groups.

How did they let a muzzie become a party leader in the first place?
Further proof that the GOP will sell the “R” brand to anyone who pays whatever price it demands or serves whatever perceived need it has.
GW Bush and Rick Perry invited in large numbers of muslims.
TX has more mosques than most states.
Religious freedom has nothing to do with nothing. They should oust this Muslim simply because his political philosophy and our political philosophies are as different as night and day.
Islam is a theo-political system of laws which is anathema to our laws and our Constitution.
According to this, Texas is #3 for number of mosques in a state

This guy has only been in Texas for something like 10 years. And he’s in any enemy religion . The governor should butt out.
The Republican party as a whole is almost a branch of Sunni Islam. And that idiot George Bush led the pack. After 9/11 that low-life SOB let in 875,000 moslems, and increased Saudi immigration 16 fold.
Now we’re paying the price. The camel jockeys are starting to flex their muscles
Also, Perry and Abbott both have tried to bring every Californian they can find into Texas.
Sometimes, it’s almost like they’re all working against us. That’s probably just my imagination
The Bushes did more to damage the Republican party than any democrat could ever hope to do.
Remember Bush telling everybody it’s a religion of peace.....

Against over 1350 years of evidence to the contrary, I will never forget, or forgive.....
Same here
Texas ping.
Zudie Jasser is a Moslem, a former Navy Office, lives in Arizona (if I remember correctly), and is a leader in trying to get rid of Moslem extremists and extreme thought.
There are good Moslems and we should not drive them away with blind intolerance/hate.
My son’s unit in the initial invasion of Iraq contained several young local Moslem soldiers (Ft. Belvoir, Va) who fortunately spoke Arabic and were able to defuse some very dangerous situations with Iraqi civilians. They are as much an American as my son and they all were American soldiers FIRST. By the way, my son was the only Jewish soldier in his company (helped to liberate the land of our ancestors re Ur, Babylon, etc).
The effort to remove him from a vice chair of the Republican has been ongoing for several months is about his religion, not his politics. This will not remove him from the elected office he's held for four years. If he turns around and starts calling for the end of the West and Israel, then Texans will vote him out, problem solved. Otherwise, this just makes the GOP look bad.
...and that promise is nullified by Islam.
Texas ping...to weigh in on this subject.
It’s a messy one. Freedom of religion but.....I don’t think muslims believe in freedom. So it’s not an easy decision for the governor.
Agree. I used to believe that all muslems were insane jihadits. Then started working with a muslem originally from turkey. His family is still there. He hates ergodin. Says the guy is a dictator and actually admires trump for killing the radicals. Told me “someone needs to”. Then as he was sweeping the floor one night he found a cross someone had dropped. He handed it to me and said “i know you are a Christian. I do not feel right throwing this away. You take it.” I darn near cried. Still have that cross. We need the good ones on our side. I dont know the guy in texas but i do know that not every muslem is a jihadist and some are indeed republican that the party needs.
