Well that's the dilemma in a multi-threat environment, isn't it?
Do I fire one round on each target and then go back for clean up if necessary, risking target #1 - even if hit - might still be in the fight and get to me while I'm servicing target #4... or do I double tap targets #1, 2 and 3 risking that the additional time for those three additional shots allows target #4 to get to me?
I know a good double is not much more time than a single, in theory, but I'm not there yet with full house defense loads.

No, no dilemma. The correct strategy is the same etiquette as what Mom used at the dinner table. Everybody gets served once before anybody gets seconds.
I store my extra magazine next to my pistol and I’ve practiced the orientation of the magazine in my hand.
In WA state, the day is coming when they ban hi-cap mags. I need to be able to eject the mag and reload quickly with regular mags, for the very reason you state.
I can’t really dictate what order you do it. Incapacitate then eliminate. If you have to slow someone’s roll, you gotta.
When facing a multi-threat environment.
Give each one shot then go back and take care of those left standing.
Armed, engaging and closest
Armed, close
Armed, further etc.
Then it is clean up, but quickly. Of course, at night, inside one's home, in the dark, lots of situational awareness/combat intell is missing, basically anyone not authorized to be present is a target of equal threat value, even if unarmed. It's in the Bible too. Have to instruct and practice to insure that everyone else ( authorized to be present) stays put until the all clear key word is announced by the prime actor.
