Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) on Monday night said that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) "shouldn't condone" her supporters who brought up the 2017 shooting that seriously injured the minority whip in order to berate him online.
"She oughta own up and just say, 'Look this isnt something that I condone,'" Scalise said on Fox News's "Hannity."
"She doesnt own this herself directly, but she shouldnt condone it either."
Scalise and Ocasio-Cortez briefly sparred on Twitter over the weekend over the freshman New York lawmaker's call for a 70 percent tax rate on Americans making more than $10 million. Scalise ended the conversation with screenshots of messages from some of Ocasio-Cortez's followers, who called to "snipe his ass" and "kick his cane."
"Hi @AOC," Scalise wrote on Sunday. "Happy to continue this debate on the Floor of the Peoples House, but its clearly not productive to engage here with some of your radical followers. #StayClassy"
Scalise was shot and severely injured during a practice for the charity Congressional Baseball Game in 2017. He required a cane to get around as he recovered.
"We shouldnt tolerate either side, our friends or our enemies in a political debate, to encourage or incite violence against another person," Scalise told Hannity on Monday.
"Im not offended by words like so many others feign to be, but when it talks about violence, it gets to a line that I think we have a responsibility to call out," Hannity said.
"The First Amendment doesnt allow you to say 'fire' in a movie theater," Scalise said. "When you incite violence against someone else, thats not the way we act in this country. If you wanna debate the merits, then go ahead."
Cortez still hasn't issued an apology or asked her base of radicals to be more respectful.
Why doesn’t she say: “That’s not who we are!” (She doesn’t because... that is who they are!)
Not only “shouldn’t condone,” which she is in fact doing by saying nothing, she should condemn them.
It amazes me these Democrat House freshmen (sorry bout the men in that word) are strolling into DC with all the answers that have eluded Congress before. Reminds me of the millennials that think they are the greatest generation. What have you accomplished? Oh, we’ve have gone to college.
Imagine the totally different reaction in the Media if a lone gunman attacked the Democratic Party’s baseball team at practice. Then try to imagine someone, anyone criticizing one of the survivors for anything they may say.
Exactly.
“Cortez still hasn’t issued an apology or asked her base of radicals to be more respectful. “
That’s only because she’s stupid AND nuts.
.
Then it flabbergasts me the same idiot Republican congressmen engage in a conversation with a retard from the Bronx.
With Republicans the stupid runs deep.
The cesspool contains both R and D turds.
Where is the word disavow? If AOC were a Republican, every propaganda media person would be asking her if she disavows the actions of her supporters.
So this is what "being morally right" looks like ...
“...The Republican leaders ...”
Still waiting to SEE a “Republican leader” step up, actually... other than Trump.
Were I Scalise, I’d have said to AOC “One of YOUR lunatics shot at my colleagues and me... this is what YOUR party advocates.” Pin it squarely on them, where it belongs.
But he took the high road that the other side doesn’t deserve.
You’re right about one thing, too many Republicans are concerned with looking honorable and taking the high road. He should have been more forceful on the pushback IMO.
They would still huff and puff about needing to take the high road and not stoop to their level at the same time they were being herded into cattle cars to go to the Gulag.
His response should have been the B*tch-slap Heard Round The World...
The real anger should be at the worthless GOP as a whole. They did build a wall but that wall was to stop MAGA and they did nothing of substance to win House races. The GOPers/#NeverTrumptards are the real “resistance”.
She doesn’t get face-time in the media by making nice nice.
