Xi Jinping Orders Military to ‘Enhance Combat Readiness’ After U.S. Travel Warning
Breitbart News ^ | January 4, 2019 | Frances Martel

Xi has issued public remarks on several occasions this week – first to herald in the new year, then to issue threats to Taiwan to surrender to Chinese rule or expect military action. In that speech, Xi stated, “we make no promise to abandon the use of force, and retain the option of taking all necessary measures,” he also said, according to the Times. “Reunification is a historical trend and it is the right path. Taiwan independence is an adverse current of history and is a dead end,” Xi said, adding a subtle note to the United States that “foreign interference is intolerable.”

Taiwan has trustworthy allies with nukes.

Who would that be?

India? France? Great Britain? Israel?

Taiwan needs its own nukes targeted on Beijing, the 3 Gorges Dam and the port cities where an invasion will come from. Even though Taiwan has allies with nukes, the additional deterrent will make China less likely to start a conflict. And if there is a conflict, best to use them at the start of the fight.

I remember it well:

Absolutely disgusting, but perfectly illustrates the temper of the man/boy in the White House at the time.

Well, okay, maybe trustworthy allies was not the most accurate phrase. ;-) Taiwan itself has suffered some flaky politics at times. But there are some nations with interests in keeping Taiwan and the routes in that area free.

WWI started because of mutual defense treaties run amok. Britain and France learned the wrong lesson from that and, although bound by treaty to Poland, when Germany overran that nation, did nothing. This was called the Phony War, also known as the Sitzkrieg, and led ultimately to a real war anyway.

The State of New Hampshire's state motto is "Live Free Or Die".It's been on their license plates for decades.

If,by chance, the attitude of Taiwan's leaders...and the populace...is the same as New Hampshire's then they will probably die at some point because China *will* make a move. It's just a question of when.

But if Taiwan's attitude is "Better Red Than Dead" they will be absorbed...annexed... eventually.

It will look a lot like what Hitler did to Austria.

Maybe a better term would be “Fair weather friends.”

If Taiwan would take out the Three Gorges Dam a large section of china would go dark plus drowning a few million people.

I disagree. But under the circumstances, I’ll save the explanation for later.

According to what we've seen publicized for some time, for the foreseeable future, the Taiwanese leadership is decided on its position and posture for purposes of the situation at hand. No one is going to change that with political speech from nations other than Taiwan.

As for our government's position, diplomatic speech from our leaders and diplomats does not honestly represent obvious intent. If any side cowers and backs down from its recent huffing and puffing, it will be China. And the world will laugh.
