GOP Sen. Cruz, Rep. Rooney introduce constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Congress

Washington (CNN)Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Republican Rep. Francis Rooney proposed a Constitutional amendment on Thursday that would impose term limits on members of both houses of Congress.

The amendment, co-sponsored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), and David Perdue (R-Ga.), would restrict senators to two six-year terms and House members to three two-year terms. A similar amendment was proposed by Cruz in January of 2017.

"For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people," Cruz said. "Term limits on members of Congress offer a solution to the brokenness we see in Washington, D.C. It is long past time for Congress to hold itself accountable. I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification."

Good start. It should also include a minimum age requirement of 35 years for all elected officials in the country. And pay and housing allowance sufficient to make public service not be too onerous for a dentist or doctor (or any other professional besides lawyer) to undertake.

Then we could have a citizen government!

Sounds good, but I think this is a bad idea.

If Congress members don’t have a constant threat of reelection, they will constantly go rogue. Think about all members being “lame ducks” every few years, they won’t care how they vote. No accountability.

Bad idea. Very bad idea.

“Term Limits AND Recall in place for each and every level of politician AND judge is, badly, needed, asap!”

I would go with mandatory retirement at the age you can “start” to collect social security.

That, and that the limits are for consecutive terms and not lifetime bans - that would still create a lot of needed turnover.

Grandstanding.

Why didn’t he intro it while the Pubbies still held the House, Senate and WH?

It will go nowhere and he knows it.

The Turtle claims we don’t need term limits. He claims that’s what the ballot box is for. Guess he thinks he fooling someone with that lie.

It would be interesting to see a study of politicians time in a single office over time. Bet this wasn’t a problem 100 years ago.

Lot’s of luck. It makes sense, so therefore hasn’t got a chance of passing.

The term limits on its own will never pass.
I suggest this.
Require a two consecutive term limit for senator and three consecutive for house and then require senators to return to the real world for at least one 6 year period after which they can run again if they wish. Accordingly require house members return to civilian life for 4 years after which the they can run again. This will turn over both houses and let members reacquaint themselves with the real world.....Or some variation of the above.
