Doctor Who branded ‘homophobic’ for giving gay character 30 secs of screen time before killing him

VIEWERS have accused Doctor Who bosses of swiftly killing off gay and lesbian characters.

They voiced anger online after a security guard was murdered in the New Year’s Day special.

It happened just seconds after the guard revealed he had a boyfriend — and followed the slayings of two lesbian characters in October.

The guard, played by Connor Calland, was seen challenging a Dalek-controlled character called Lin.

Asked who can unlock a fingerprint-operated door, he said: “Today, just me. Most secure digits in Yorkshire. That’s what I tell my boyfriend, anyway.”

Seconds later he was exterminated.

Doctor Who chiefs Chris Chibnall and Matt Strevens vowed to feature LGBT characters “from across the spectrum” in the latest series, which stars Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord.

But one fan wrote: “I see Chris Chibnall continues to expand LGBT rep in Doctor Who in the form of corpses rather than characters. Yep, I see what you did there, and what you seem to keep doing.”

Another said the season has been peppered “with one-off, often unnamed gay characters” who are instantly killed. Alex Tyler said: “Oh wow the gay guard that dies after two lines, is this the diversity and inclusion BBC were promising?”

A Doctor Who source said: “There were several key LGBT characters throughout this series, as has been the case since the show returned in 2005.”

Are these minor characters wearing red shirts while on camera? That’s been tried before, and became an easy way to predict the fate of ........... minor characters in a (At least more than one episode) long-running dramatic series.

Eh? They had a major character who happened to be gay. At the end of his run, The Doctor went back before they met and set him up with a gay lover as a parting (a never have met-ing?) gift. That didn’t strike me as particularly homophobic at the time...

When wardrobe handed you the red shirt you knew you were never coming back. It usually took longer to put on the costume than it took your character to die.
Total air time? Usually less than two minutes.

Reminds me of a satirical Kickstarter campaign for a game to be called “American School Shooter”, which was to feature a diverse cast of identity group characters as targets.

Equity isn’t fair.
“We want equal representation - but you have to give us special privileges. The female and homosexual characters must then be given extra screen time and never die, in the name of fairness.”

What year was that in? I let my kids see older Dr. Who episodes, but I don't want them exposed to that garbage.

First season of the reboot with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. The gay character was Captain Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman (who is gay in real life).

I forced myself to watch until episode four. She was so-so but the last straw for me was the "council house" third world characters that dumbed down the whole concept of The Doctor. That one kid always talking to his step-granddad about "Me Nan" made me want to kick the TV right in. A pox on them.

It was much worse than when I refused to watch Sylvester McCoy's characterization of Doctor Who.

Great Britain is invaded by alien hordes for the first time since 1066 and the TV has to kowtow to the invaders. They can flush Cardiff into the sea.

The new Doctor? Laughably bad writing is the hallmark of the reboot. It is hard to criticize an actress in these circumstances. I like her, but the brand is weakened by her IMO.

Because the 2% of the audience should tell producers how to script the show for the other 98% of the audience.
