Chinese warship with high-tech ‘railgun’ sets sail but here’s why you should be skeptical of it

A Chinese navy vessel sporting what appears to be a high-tech next-generation armament set sail earlier this week generating speculation that the weapon will be undergoing sea trials.

The weapon is called a “railgun,” and it is designed to fire projectiles at hypersonic speeds over distances that exceed 100 miles. But the gun doesn’t use traditional shells and gunpowder, it uses electricity to launch projectiles down a rail with enough velocity to destroy targets including other warships.

Pictures of the Chinese warship sporting a railgun were initially posted online earlier this year.

If the Chicoms have such a weapon, we have the Clintons to thank.

Railguns turn out to be very hard to implement. Oh, the concept isn’t hard, but the devil is in the details. Or everyone would already have them.

Isn’t the problem with a rail gun the electricity that has to be generated to fire a projectile?

The only way to adequately cool this weapon is to have the crew urinate on it.

Unless they have a really really long extension cord they won’t be able to go too far out anyway.

The US version:

Breathlessly touted because ammo would be inert and SUPPOSEDLY almost free, it turns out the ammo is EXPENSIVE AS ALL HELL.

For now our version for budgetary reasons is mostly just decoration.

Yes, I have seen those amazing super duper slo-mo penetration shots.

Seen ‘em a zillion times.

STILL.

“The only way to adequately cool this weapon is to have the crew urinate on it.”

And it has to be done with it plugged in!

I think I read that it is powered by 586,000 AA batteries.

The BS flag is on the field: nobody has solved the large issues with rail guns.

Like accuracy.

Or guidance.

Or the massive electric pulse on firing that can fry other electronics nearby and announce to the entire planet where you are.

Or any kind of explosive fill to give the projectile some sort of lethality when the kinetic energy bleeds off.

Other than that, great idea.

”A new super weapon for which there is no defense...”

Oh really? How about a couple torpedoes and a cruise missile or two?

“The peeing on a running JD tractor magneto effect!”

Yeah, it’s called “completing the ground!” The other “neat trick” we used to use back in HS days, was charging up the capacitor out of a a distributor by holding it between the spark plug and the cylinder head on a running engine by the insulated pigtail, then just leaving it around for some inquisitive soul to pick it up!

Lasers seem to be the wave of the future. While rail guns are certainly deadly, it is still a weapon that fires a projectile just like cannons have for centuries. I’m not sure ships and troops need both a rail gun and lasers.

Ahhh, the old days..., take the long leads on a big cap and fold them over the cap body (with rubber gloves) and toss it to your victim yelling "Catch"!
