President Trump denounced former Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday, saying at a cabinet meeting he "essentially" fired the former Marine Corps general from the top Pentagon post.
"What's he done for me? How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good," Trump said, according to a Bloomberg News journalist, who reported a quote relayed by a colleague in the room.
"As you know, President Obama fired him, and essentially so did I," Trump said at the meeting, attended by Mattis' replacement, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.

But the more I find out about Mattis, the worse he seems.
Mattis was in favor of the terrible, treasonous Iran deal and fought to keep it when Trump ended it.
Mattis supported a failed policy in Afghanistan and rules of engagement that assured U.S. troops were vulnerable and often killed and wounded.
Mattis supported the Paris Climate Accords that would have been a disaster for the U.S.
Trump was right to fire Mattis.
Youre fired! The White House is like The Apprentice. LOL
“essentially”
by the end of the year Trump will be fondling steel ball-bearings and mumbling about missing strawberries...
Keep believin' what yer told.
... and yet Trump kept Mattis in an important cabinet post for two years.
You actually forgot the now-printed story about how Mattis was a Clinton tool right from the start and was supposed to be her SecDef once she was prez.
“Mattis supported the Paris Climate Accords “
Plus his open defiance of his CIC with the tranny’s and being against using troops to defend our own border. He liked to talk big but at the end of the day a rat is a rat.
He named Mattis to keep the Deep State close and forestall a revolt from the GOP RINO wing.
That constraint is gone now.
“Mattis supported the Paris Climate Accords”
Obviously out of his policy area.
From what I can gather, all of the others are fondling their balls and mumbling about missing gonads.
“rules of engagement that assured U.S. troops were vulnerable and often killed and wounded”
details?
examples?
The usual procedure is giving them the option to resign, or be fired. Mattis chose wisely.
If Trump wishes to achieve his agenda and prosper politically, he has to stop surrounding himself with these globalist generals who will never withdraw from the debilitating foreign entanglements.
[.....Trump said, according to a Bloomberg News journalist, who reported a quote relayed by a colleague in the room.]
These “anonymous sources” reportings remind me of this scene from Ferris Bueller....
sure. whatever.
He made his reputation as a battle-field general, and he will always have that.
When he undercut Trump at the border, I thought then, he would have to go. Trump was trying to run a bluff there, to convince the caravan to turn around. He needed a big show of force. Instead, Mattis was telling everyone he was not going to use troops to patrol or anything else. Even if that were the reality, to say so out loud only encouraged the caravans.
So he needed to be fired, from that moment on. Trump only waited a few weeks to give him his dignity. When he took a shot at Trump in his resignation letter, though, he forfeited that consideration.
Oooooooooo! What’s that shiney thing over there?
SQUIRREL!
Sounds like Mattis was one of these guys who always believed he was smarter than his boss and could manipulate him. Then he ran up against Trump and found he couldn’t be rolled.
He may be helping the guy in retirement by bad-mouthing him.
(knowingly or not)
