Teachers and other public education employees, such as community-college faculty, school psychologists and janitors, are quitting their jobs at the fastest rate on record, government data shows.
A tight labor market with historically low unemployment has encouraged Americans in a variety of occupations to quit their jobs at elevated rates, with the expectation they can find something better. But quitting among public educators stands out because the field is one where stability is viewed as a key perk and longevity often rewarded.
The educators may be finding new jobs at other schools, or leaving education altogether: The departures come alongside protests this year in six states where teachers in some cases shut down schools over tight budgets, small raises and poor conditions.
In the first 10 months of 2018, public educators quit at an average rate of 83 per 10,000 a month, according to the Labor Department. While that is still well below the rate for American workers overall231 voluntary departures per 10,000 workers in 2018it is the highest rate for public educators since such records began in 2001.

I can understand why, when they aren’t allowed to discipline monstrous kids
I guess that means their learning curve is improving.
Exposure to toxic liberalism is just not worth it for normal people.
Good. Let the system collapse.
Even some lefties believe that the goal of education SHOULD be to teach, and not ONLY serve as an instrument of government indoctrination.
If you drill down in the numbers. You will probably find that the teachers leaving are in urban school districts, high minority, low discipline, high student/teacher ratios. I have teachers in my family. Daughter turned down a job offer in an urban school, took one from a high achieving suburban school. Another changed emphasis and left an urban school to work in a suburban high achieving school. Both are doing very well as are happy in their current positions,
Conversely, my former neighbor was a middle school science teacher. He was just down to counting the time till he could retire, school was being run by a PC type principal, would not allow discipline of the students
Discipline? They cannot even defend against assault.
In the case of California teachers, they’re retiring with whatever pension they’re allowed (better than most in this country) and moving to Nevada in order to avoid having to pay California income taxes on their pensions.
No surprises here. Discipline is prohibited, very little support from parents, forced to include unteachable kids on some sort of spectrum, reduced budgets, idiotic and constantly changing metrics, endless preparation and post class paperwork, and miserably low pay.
Whats not to love?
Johnny can’t read but he can sure as heck get your butt fired if you get his gender wrong.
Visit a public school sometime. They are almost ALL high minority, even the ones in the ‘burbs. Though the ones in the ‘burbs may still be better.
Diversity — it’s what’s for dinner.
I’ve known many teachers who quit after no more than 2 years. This is public schools, of course.
I suspect this phenomenon is not improving the gene pool or average IQ of the remaining faculty.
Teachers and substitute teachers I know say they will quit their profession before adhering to the mandatory LGBTQ regulations regarding names and pronouns.
I know a school lunch lady
Even in that setting , she said the liberals make life for the deplorables almost unbearable
My brother was teaching HS Chemistry and Physics after 30+ years in private sector engineering.
He got tired of doing the job the parents should have been doing.
Millennials are drama queens.
and we're not even sure if they're leaving teaching or finding other teaching jobs...
and they are well paid for what their education is and their cushy hrs and generous bennies and pensions....
but lets create a false crisis so the unions can force higher property taxes on the workers so teachers can get another holiday and more pay...
Are they quiting - or retiring with fat pensions and gold-plated benefits?
Oh goodness!!!!
I guess we will have to give these hard working people in the public school system a higher salary and a better pension plan to keep them from leaving.
But wait, since 2003 haven’t we already more than tripled the amount of taxpayer money going to fund government employee pension plans each year?
