Angela Merkel: Germany to take on greater global responsibility

In 2019 Germany will assume greater international responsibility and must stand up for its convictions, Angela Merkel has vowed in an annual address.

The chancellor said old certainties about international cooperation had "come under pressure", alluding to strained US-German relations. This year, President Donald Trump and the chancellor have clashed on German domestic and foreign policy issues.

Mrs Merkel's New Year's speech will be broadcast in full later on Monday.

Over the past year, Chancellor Merkel has been a leading defender of multilateralism, in contrast to Mr Trump's America First foreign policy. "In our own interest, we must take on more responsibility," the German leader said, warning that global problems like climate change, migration and terrorism cannot be solved alone.

By taking up a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in 2019 and 2020, Germany would push for "global solutions", Ms Merkel said.

You used the term Mutti. I know in Hessen colloquial Deutsche they apply the word when they refer to their mother. Is that what the “Germans” are calling her ?

Your party barely survived forming a government Fuhrer Merkel (the nationalist AfD came in second at 18% of the vote) and that single world government you had envisioned isn't doing so well either.

"Shocking results of the latest poll by the EU Barometer, a poll of all 28 member states that is taken every other year, show that fewer than half of the EU’s citizens trust the bloc.

The report showed that only 42 per cent have confidence in the European Union. The number of citizens who do not trust Brussels is at 48 per cent."

And they jigger the poll results by including the 28 members plus the five candidate countries (which it would be fair to assume will have a more positive view of the EU?).

The 28 European Union (EU) Member States, five candidate countries (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania) and the Turkish Cypriot Community in the part of the country that is not controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

“Global responsibility...”

Well, I guess she could start with the Southern European countries. Help with their debt.

(She wants “global responsibility” as long as Germany is calling the shots, but not paying for it). Talk is cheap.

Notice how France and Germany ALWAYS paint lack of “international cooperation” as U.S. lack of cooperation (with them) instead of their lack of cooperation with the U.S.

Merkel is the best female leader of Germany since Rosa Luxemburg. Although her views seem closer to those of a later ruler.

She’s just preparing the way for her to get a position in the EU government. She’s not dropping out of politics. She is willing to sell out Germany for her political aspirations.

There were never actual tariffs on new Euro stuff

Tariffs were put forward bu President Trump as a negotiating gambit to increase export sales to Europe.

Agreement was made with the Euro officials to reduce Euro tariffs and to negotiate other terms of trade to American satisfaction.

Euro auto companies, especially German, caved within hours of the announcement
