The Populist Right is Less Popular Than You Think
The American Conservative ^ | 12/31/18 | Paul Gottfried

Posted on 12/30/2018 8:31:25 PM PST by OddLane

It never ceases to amaze me how the populist Right, or what speaks in its name, overestimates its strength both here and in Western Europe. One needn’t be an enemy of these activists to recognize the exaggerated nature of their claims.

Those in the media who now demand a border wall insist that the “people” want this goal achieved immediately if not sooner. In fact, according to Ann Coulter, Trump “scammed the American people” by not giving them the wall they’re clamoring for. But according a nationwide poll by The Hill, 51 percent of American voters oppose Trump’s project, while only 49 percent endorse it. Other poll results indicate even more widespread resistance to Trump’s border wall. Meanwhile, as many as 80 percent of those polled wish to legalize DACA residents, and presumably they aren’t making their stand contingent on building the wall, as Trump is.

Equally misleading is the happy talk coming from French and German populists who seem to believe they can give the “people” a real voice by holding referenda. One devotee of the Rassemblement National (the new name for France’s Front National) wishes to follow Switzerland and Croatia, which hold referenda on important political and economic questions. The problem with referenda is that they’re not much of a check on regular party politics...

Trump won with 46% of vote. If 49% support the wall, it would mean he would expand his appeal to the voters that elected him.

Indeed found out my populist ideas are not popular with Mrs. Gamgee. She was formerly an American, and really had and has no problem with the USA becoming Mexico. She thinks they work hard and why should I care if they take jobs. What do I know. I’m Canadian. Maybe you guys, generally speaking, really don’t care that laws are broken and maybe Mexicans are a net positive to America?

She also was shocked when I said not ONE US soldier should die to protect Sunnis from Assad or the other way around. And anyone that does think so should head on down to the recruiting office and sign up.

Good thing he wasn’t George Washington’s speech writer at Valley Forge.

(((Gottfried)))

What's that supposed to mean? That you have a problem about Gottfried being Jewish?

The Democrats have gone full blown socialist. Even Moonbeam knows there is a problem with the left. In other words they are not going to be able to hide their true agenda from main street anymore.

I guess since there’s no bandwagon, we should all jump off the bandwagon.

The poll conducted here was done by HarrisX. Their polling about the Supreme Court back when the Kavanaugh hearings started said this:
The survey, conducted last week by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company, found that 24 percent of Americans said the high court was too conservative, while 19 percent said it was too liberal. Thirty percent of respondents said the Supreme Court is “just about right,” with 27 percent saying they were unsure. […]

The American Barometer survey was conducted Aug. 31 through Sept. 1 among 1,000 registered voters. The sampling margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. …
So much for their credibility.

If critical thinking is applies, no one would defend having borders a person could violate on foot. There has to be more critical thinkers than 45 %. But there is a lot of adverse media so that can explain the disparity.

The border patrol wants a fence/wall/barrier and I even heard from a true liberal that Trump is doing the right thing by trying to prevent the overwhelming of our southern border. So I wonder what the real sentiment is?

The barrier, is a trivial part of the country’s finance and Trump was right to try to get the dems to buy in with a DACA deal. He knows it is not possible to deport 2 millions of people so best to give them the legal status so that they can work and pay taxes. Plus, I think personally that having a two tiered system of foreign born labor (one with papers and one without) is pretty much the same thing as suborning a form of indentured servitude. Something we all should be able to see through and oppose.

Re: Only 49% endorse The Wall.

Since Trump got just 46% of the popular vote in 2016, support for The Wall has actually increased since the election.

And he's right. Trump got 45% of the vote last time. While he may win reelection, he doesn't have the overwhelming support that some people think he has.

we all know Trump got less than 50% beause of illegal votes.

so happy to know where you stand.
