Chuck Todd Bans 'Climate Deniers' from Climate Change Special
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

The Closing of the American Mind was Allan Bloom's groundbreaking critique of "absolute understanding" in academia and the way that it undermines critical thinking. If Bloom were with us today, we could imagine him writing a sequel devoted to the way the climate change industry has sought to silence dissent.

Chuck Todd gave a stunning example of the phenomenon this morning in his introduction of a Meet the Press special edition on climate change. Todd quite literally announced that dissent would not be tolerated. Here was Todd:

"Just as important as what we are going to do this hour is what we're not going to do. We're not going to debate climate change, the existence of it. The Earth is getting hotter, and human activity is a major cause. Period. We're not going to give time to climate deniers."

In the late cretaceous CO2 levels were about 1000 ppm.

It’s an entertainment show in this case for the environmentalists. A proper show about climate change would include a lot of raw data and discussions of the meaning of the raw data. A proper show would include people who reached various conclusions.

Such a show would be boring and not satisfying to either side.

Chuck is a successful left wing entertainer.

something you may or may not be interested in- 1350+ peer review papers dismantling the accusation that man is causing climate change

There is a powerful lot of reading material there- get back to me when you’ve finished reading them lol :)

look into the fact that temperatures always rise first, then CO2 rises- ice core samples prove this out- temps rise 100’s of years before CO2 does- so CO2 can’t possibly be the cause of rising temperatures-

But the rise from 0.028% to 0.041% is manmade.

Are volcanoes and wildfires calculated each year?

How big a difference do they make?

It's a question, not a challenge.

Proving once again “climate change” is a religious belief.

When dissent in science is banned, science becomes a religion.

So I guess the debate is over, as Al Gore insists. It's "settled science" he claims, whatever that means.

Odd, I never saw, read or heard of any debates over whether climate change caused by human activity was real or not.

The first thing I realized was when big AL said this nonexistent debate was over.

Chuck Todd wouldn't have a show if his producers told him that any negative stories on Donald Trump were not going to be allowed.

He'd have to fold his tent.

Volcanic CO2 IS about 1% of manmade CO2. The largest eruptions like Pinatubo in 1992 release 10's of Mt of CO2. That's a few days worth of manmade. As for wildfires, those are generally not going to add much net CO2 because the vegetation grows back within a few years and sucks back all that CO2 that was released in the fire.

But they can both make a difference in global temperature. It is possible (and scientifically supported) that wildfires cause net cooling due to increased aerosols. Aerosols have a lot more cooling power than CO2 has in warming power. Large eruptions like Pinatubo release a relatively trivial amount of CO2 but definitely cause cooling again from aerosols. In both cases, wildfire and volcanoes, the aerosols have to reach the stratosphere to cause long lasting cooling. That means very intense fires or very large eruptions.

Fossil fuels have a different mix of isotopic carbon, as I recall.

The burning of fossil fuels produces CO2 that has that isotopic mix.

Determining the current isotopic mix, you can do the math and determine how much is from fossil fuels.

That is my understanding of how the percentage of CO2 produced by man has been determined.

Also we have records showing the rise in CO2 from 280 to 410 ppm.

The recent rise, coincident with increased emissions, and the isotopic data show the rise is due to the use of fossil fuels.

I was skeptical of it until I read the paper on the isotopic mix, a while back.

Here is a site that explains the isotopic mix in fair detail. Warning ... it is a pro global warming site.

Here's one from the list https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/cr/v10/n1/p69-82/ Full paper: https://www.int-res.com/articles/cr/10/c010p069.pdf He points out the relative weak effect of manmade CO2: "...a mean global warming of only 0.4°C for a 300 to 600 ppm doubling of the air’s CO2 content".

There's no question in the paper that mankind is creating a rise in CO2. He is questioning whether it will lead to "catastrophic warming". Note that the entire list that you linked (which I have been aware of for at least 10 years), is dedicated to showing that catastrophic warming (or manmade "climate change") is not valid science. If there are in fact any papers in there at all that support the idea that human activity is not responsible for the rise in CO2 from 280 to 410 ppm (and 2-3 ppm more every year), then I would be happy to read it. I will keep looking for such a paper myself, but it is unlikely to be there because it is not scientifically supported.

Nothing says “This is a cult” like banning any dissent. Dissent is the basis for Science.

Blind faith has no place in science.

But it does in government funding - and when science and billion dollar contracts fight, the money too often wins.

From President Eisenhower's farewell address.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present -- and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

Eisenhower hit dead center with that warning.

And each day dozens of volcanic eruptions add more and more and more.
https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/volcano-activity/news/72612/Volcanic-activity-worldwide-27-Dec-2018-Etna-volcano-Fuego-Popocatepetl-Krakatoa-Shiveluch-Re.html

Reducing man made Co2 will make little difference to the global climate. Trying to do so will make a big difference to our standard living though.

Maybe plugging all the worlds volcanos with vast amounts of cash - just as effective.

How much of the “settled science” crowd that believes we can somehow easily use science to colonize Mars, but the absolute only way to address climate change on earth is to cripple western industry and freedom.

The burning of fossil fuels produces CO2 that has that isotopic mix.

Yes, but volcanoes produce the same C14-depleted CO2 as burning fossil fuels. So you can't use that isotope as evidence for or against volcanic origin. Also there was a large pulse of C14 from atmospheric nuclear testing, so that has messed up the measurements since the 1950's.

“Hotter”, “Colder”, “Changing”

The key identifier of a cult is that there is no possible data that could falsify their beliefs.

We are dealing with a cult here, not science.
