Narrow majority backs Trump on Syria, Afghanistan troop reductions
The Hill ^ | Dec 29, 2018

A narrow majority of U.S. voters support President Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria and reduce the country's military presence in Afghanistan, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said they back the moves in Syria and Afghanistan, which came as a surprise to the president's own national security advisers when it was announced last week. By contrast, 48 percent said they oppose the troop withdrawals and reductions, the poll found.

Trump announced he would completely remove the approximately 2,000 troops in Syria battling ISIS, while he said he would cut in half the roughly 14,000 U.S. force in Afghanistan.

The announcements contributed to the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Brett McGurk, the U.S. special envoy to the coalition fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Isn’t this the same polling group that claimed a majority favor impeachment?

More of these joke polls. Maybe fifty years ago the polls might have meant something, but today they serve only as tools of propaganda. I doubt if most Americans know much about our involvement in Syria and the Afghanistan involvement is one I doubt most Americans have a positive view of after 17 years. More junk .

Narrow Majority?

No, the people want peace.

Do not believe the establishment lies, seventeen years is enough. The Pubo-crat political war-machine has been halted and it will probably get the President impeached - but impeachment for peace would be a badge of honor.

Peace begins when we start it.

It would be much more than a narrow majority if not for the maniacs.

It would be much more than a narrow majority if all of the Trump polls weren't off by 5-15 points... especially when they're isn't an election and the pollsters know they can't get "caught" by the actual results.

I do not know a single person in my day-to-day life that thinks we should be anywhere near SYRIA. Not a single one. NOBODY. Nearly everyone I know, left, right or otherwise thinks we need to be out of the Mideast altogether.

MSM polls are sewage - even the numb and dumb are waking up to it.

I disagree. Those who lived through the Viet Nam Era, when young men could be forced to join the military and serve in combat, it was war that was opposed. Listen to the music of the era: "Masters of War" "Monster" "War What is it Good For" etc. I have neighbors who were students at Kent State when four student protestors were killed by the National Guard. So many people who despise Trump are Bernie Sanders - Kucinich (etc) supporters. They don't like war at all, and a big part of the distaste for hillary is that she's an unprincipled war monger. They supported Obama because he pretended he was for ending global meddling.

No, except for being blinded by irrational mania, those people oppose, and always have opposed, being in Afghanistan and Syria. They got sold regime change in Kiev, Iraq, Libya, Egypt (etc) on false premises.

Thank you. I'm just wondering who reads senseless s**t like this and believes it any longer.

I'm just patiently waiting for these rags, all of them, to follow The Weekly Standard's well deserved death. Roll Call, National Review, The Hill. I'm just tapping my foot at this point.

To their yellow journalists troll here... JUST DIE MFers.

It would be 80% support for getting out, if it wasn’t Trump’s idea.

Also note that they don’t ask about Syria alone - I suspect they are afraid to, as they know that the US never really had an issue with Assad, we just went there to have some fun bombing a country.

Nobody knows why we are there spilling our blood and theirs, and bankrupting our country. Defend our borders, and keep our power in the air, space and oceans as part of that defense, but out of foreign soil.

48% of Americans want to continue illegal, endless wars because Trumps wants to get us out of them. They are on the side of head-chopping Wahhabi Jihadist terrorists who have and are genociding Christians.

I suspect if Trump announced a new war on cancer, 48% would oppose that, too.

What an utter & undescribable disgrace half this nation has become.

It's not about doing what is popular, it's about doing what is right.

We never should have involved ourselves and while I am firmly on the side of the brave servicemen injured and killed, it is not our fight.

Agreed!

There is one party I hate more than the Communist party, and that is the Democrat party. At least the Communist party is upfront on what they believe and stand for. The Democrat party is hypocritical, sneaky, outright liars and cheaters. I hate that party.

What's the diff?

Even Debbie "The washrag" Schultz, nor Hillary, can tell you the difference between a socialist and a RAT.

The HILL headline stretches and spins the results of some non-specific poll questions. Poll results can be manipulated by inserting meaning to the questions.

for example : poll question; "Do you think troops would be required to keep the Taliban from returning to power in Afghanistan"; /yes 52%/ headline reads: "Majority of americans oppose Trumps support of the Taliban by removing troops"

Half the population, if not more, has no idea why we are in Syria.

Add me to the list.

"We never should have involved ourselves and while I am firmly on the side of the brave servicemen injured and killed, it is not our fight."

connecting the dots from the beginning I always thought that the Syria war was a CIA operation approved by Obama and Hillary as an extension of the Libya War which was to stop Russian Oil interest money laundering , kill Ghadaffi and seize his monetary assets held in EU banks. Assad was next in line. The CIA recruited "ISIS", the same players who did Libya. But Putin drew the line and Russian air support was in range

I believe Afghanistan is about keeping control of where the money flows from one of the largest commodities on the planet (OPIUM). Historically Opium is a required substance of war and is why Afghanistan has always been occupied. Of course, opium can be produced anywhere, but Afghanistan controls the market price worldwide
