The transformers that blew sat on two sets of elevated poles. I doubt saboteurs could have placed charges without being noticed and charges wouldn’t have produced this kind of pyrotechnics. They would simply have made a boom and cut the power. A smaller transformer blew about twenty feet off my property last summer. My house was on a different line but the folks across the street went out. Same blue arcing light though a muvh much dhorter duration, maybe ten seconds.

Saw lots of people freaking out about it on twitter.

It appears to be right next to the Astoria power stations facility. There’d be monitoring, and much more useful to hit there.

Saw lightning hit a transformer around midnight about a mile away in 2008, incredibly bright blue arc lit the sky to daylight for about 30 seconds.
The twitter pics looked identical; very distinctive.

I don’t know what caused the electrical outage, but fortunately, it had been corrected by the time I got home. My neighbor was quick to inform me that “we lost the electric” as she saw me approaching. The only sign I had of this happening was my computer screen telling me I had no internet connection when clearly I did, and one clock which does not have a battery backup, blinking. I’ll have to reset that. Thank goodness it’s just the one!

Why do people get so freaked out about stuff like that? It’s hilarious and pitiful, at the same time.
