Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said Thursday that his office is exploring whether disinformation tactics deployed against Republican Roy Moore during last year's special election violated state campaign laws and said he was worried that the operation could have affected the closely fought Senate race.
"The information is concerning," Marshall, a Republican, said in a phone interview. "The impact it had on the election is something that's significant for us to explore, and we'll go from there."
Moore lost the election to his Democratic rival, Sen. Doug Jones.
Marshall, who said he learned of the disinformation campaign called Project Birmingham through news reports over the past two weeks, stopped short of announcing a formal investigation but said his office was beginning to gather information about the effort.
"We're planning to explore the issue further," Marshall said.
Internet billionaire Reid Hoffman apologized on Wednesday for giving $750,000 to a group, American Engagement Technologies, that allegedly had ties to an effort to undermine support for Moore and bolster Jones. The new senator has called for a federal investigation into Project Birmingham.

A year later, and he's beginning to gather information. A regular Speedy Gonzales.
The democrats will not care about this because it was against a Republican candidate. Instead they continue with the Mueller probe against a Republican.
Al.com has comments that during the election were flooded with left wing troll comments that seem obviously paid for as well as the usual activists and normal people. I looked at them for this story and they did not disappoint - imagine separate convention of clowns, construction workers and political activists are accidentally booked at the same time/venue when suddenly a riot breaks out! The comments are rapidly increasing at this time.
Excuse my double post to you. Watching Football and not
paying attention to what I’m doing here. Take care.
Since this was a senate post the DOJ should get involved
Not a good candidate IMO but he deserves a fair shake. Bring in the lawyers!
Hard to run a good campaign when you have the media scream machine hammering you as a child molesting rapist every day, 24-7.
Really didn't need a good campaign in Alabama. Any Republican would win. That is, they would win if they weren't back stabbed by the party.
Moore almost pulled it off, till that stupid bitch Richard Shelby got on television and urged everyone to not vote for Moore.
Regardless of any other consideration, it is a fact that Moore would have been a solid vote for Trump and his agenda, and the UniParty just couldn’t have that!
No, the f***ing game didn't have a D@mn thing to do with it. @$$hole Republicans stabbing him in the back is what cost us that Senate seat.
The media "Kavanaughed" him, and pansy bitches on our side joined their lynch mob.
>>Internet billionaire Reid Hoffman apologized on Wednesday for giving $750,000 to a group,
Is that like when Communist China was sorry for illegally giving campaign cash directly to Clinton-Gore in 1996?
As Harry Reid says, “it worked, didn’t it?”
Were any of the accusations true?
My guess is no, but it didn't look so hot. But don't forget what JUST happened to Kavanaugh a couple of weeks ago.
It turns out that EVERYONE on the left was lying about that man.
And those floating turds are still walking around free, and even being celebrated.
Some people are just slow on the uptake. I recognized they were "Kavanaughing" Moore before they ever did it to Kavanaugh.
Moore lost because our party's officials deliberately stabbed him in the back because they were a bunch of pansy bitches who are frightened of the Media-attack-weapon.
Everyone of them should have said "It's up to the people of Alabama to decide." If they wanted to add anything, it should have been "I don't believe those lying bitches either."
>>How about they jail someone this time. Then have a run off election to let Roy Moore have a second chance.
One more vote in the Senate would’ve cut off Flakey Flake’s power.
That's why their broadcast weapon went to full warpower. That's why they dragged up those crazy bitch liars and gave them full media coverage while ignoring discrepancies in their narratives, and demonstrable forgery.
I've noticed both parties in Washington DC tend to cooperate to destroy any reform candidates. They want to keep the Washington DC money spending party going at all costs.
By the way where are these women who accused Moore of sexual abuse today?
I thought they clamor for justice?
No, the f***ing game didn’t have a D@mn thing to do with it.

Maybe not but for sure we’ll never know. He lost by a little
over 12,000 votes and gave up the last days.
Had Moore spent the last 10 days of the campaign with his
trailer hooked up to his truck and him and his wife travel
around Alabama visiting the small towns he may have pulled
it out.
He and his wife could have spent 12-15 hours a day pulling
into small towns, unloading his horses and riding around
main street visiting with the locals one on one. After an
hour or so in this little town move 15-20 miles down the road
and do it again. Repeat day after day sun up to after dark
but he chose to not put out the effort.
It helps to defend yourself when you are accused of being a creeper. It helps even more to not act like a creeper.
Leftists are horrible and project onto others exactly what they do.
JoMa
Expecting an Alabamian to find out he has been “had” may be most difficult to achieve.
