[The outgoing defense secretary had a good rapport with the 2016 Democratic nominee. Not so much with the president he ultimately worked for.]
During the 2016 presidential campaign, James Mattis predicted that he would be courted to serve in a Hillary Clinton administration in the likelihood that she would win the presidency. Instead, Mattis ended up working nearly two years as Secretary of Defense for Donald Trump, a president who routinely undermined his own national security team and would mock Mattis by calling him a Democrat or Moderate Dog.
Mattis' resignation on Thursday, though abrupt, came as no surprise to those who knew him and had worked alongside him in the Pentagon.
In a series of meetings with colleagues at the beginning of the administration, Mattis said he was originally surprised to get a call from the Trump team asking him to take the post of defense secretary, according to two sources with who attended those meetings. He told several people that had Clinton won the election, he thought he would have agreed to serve on her team.

at least he got tapped by Pres. Trump.
Hillary ? I’d be wary about a double-tap.
BAIT
In November 2016, Trump was completely and inexcusably unprepared to choose senior and deputy executives for his administration-———
Yes, as Bannon and others have pointed out.
I never got why Trump was spending so much time on stuff like getting Carrier to keep about 1400 jobs instead of staffing a govt with MAGA tigers.
Trump is going to have to reach down to the colonels
and Lt. Colonels to find some one not tainted by
Obama & the Clintons. Reagan did (Ollie North for example.)
This is BS.
Who works for who?
I hope Trump learned one important lesson here. His days of fawning over any jerk who happens to wear a military uniform should be over.
In 1965 my Dad listened as his boss a USAF LTG was viciously berated in committee by Teddy Kennedy about the then pending G.I. bill. Dad followed Kennedy to the VIP elevator and turned his ears bright red.
This was related to me later by one of his colleagues who said Kennedy told the SecDef that “no g**d**ed chicken colonel talks to me like that and gets away with it!”
Dad retired as the senior colonel in Infantry branch. Too bad he didn’t live to see Kennedy croak.
Boarding in a military school might influence his respect for brass.
Alan West for example.
"Tapped" and "Hillary Clinton" don't belong in the same sentence. Ever.

I agree with you.

A very timely article. The Left is doing a happy dance that Mattis quit. Now we know his true colors.
The Daily Beast saw the best opportunity to help divide its political opponents and published some fake news.
Lovely Mattis MeetAMaid
Nothing can come between us
with a bag across his shoulder
Made him look a little Like a Military Man!
You don’t know the rules? Keep your ‘tagline letter’ comments off the general forum please.
ya don’t become a Mathis in DC unless they all know you can keep the Swamp well-watered and fed. Thats what a 99-1 confirmation vote tells you
Ok fire all Obamas Generals. Be aware that any full bird or Lt. Col. is going to be a yes man. Al Haig was promoted over 240 Generals. Was he that good? And Wesley Clark? There’s a winner. Ike warned of the military/industrial complex. Washington warned of entangling alliances. Trump is a good student of history. Let him rip.
