#ShutdownStories hashtag takes off as Twitter users share how government closure affects them

By Avery Anapol - 12/24/18 04:16 PM EST

Hundreds of people took to Twitter on Sunday and Monday to share how the government shutdown is affecting them.

Using the hashtag #ShutdownStories, posts from furloughed government workers, their family members and many others accumulated thousands of retweets and favorites in just hours.

The trend appeared to be started by Twitter user @TeaPainUSA, who tweeted to their 418,000 followers a plea to share a tweet using the hashtag.

Many respondents said that they lived paycheck to paycheck, and with the government shutdown were worried about mortgage payments or medical expenses.

One woman using the #ShutdownStories hashtag wrote that her husband works as a park ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and that the couple has a 4-year-old and a 4-month-old. She expressed concern that they would not be able to cover holiday expenses or mortgage payments.

We had a baby two months ago (10/24/18); I have been on unpaid leave since then. Husband works with USFS, is our primary earner. Without his income, I don’t know what we will do. We have enough in savings to cover the mortgage in January, but beyond that... ‍♀️#ShutdownStories pic.twitter.com/2EV4qAXC0C — Little Sarah (@theSarawithanH) December 24, 2018

Another wrote that she “was too sick to work most of the month,” and was relying on a paycheck to cover a car payment.

“Thank you, Mr. President,” she wrote.

Federal Government should not be a jobs program. There should be a culling of government workers. Many “agencies” should be shut down for good.

That may be President Trumps plan with this shutdown.

Yeah, I’m dreaming.

Bureaucrats having a boo-hoo.

Cry me a few rivers and then drop dead.

The time of the wun I barely survived. Lots of opportunities for all kinds of things now for us peasants. I’m so proud of orange man. Orange man really good.

A goodly portion of people live paycheck to paycheck for all kinds of reasons. One of those is paying confiscatory taxes to support the entrenched crybabies.

Could someone with a Twitter please share this video with #shutdownstories ?

The democrats are refusing to pay for a wall they agreed to paying for earlier. This is childish spite. When a "good idea" with a democrat in office turns into a "bad idea" with a republican in office, Congressmen are simply behaving like partisan jack-asses and those affected by the shutdown should know that Trump is ready to sign as soon as they come to their senses.

Because of the shutdown, I can’t get my gubmint cheese and the surveillance van no longer idles in order to save gas.

I LOL’d when somebody told me they saw “FBI Surveillance Van 1” on the wireless list. I told them that’s a very, very old joke.

It’s funny, though.
