I never believed DJT would make a “casual” decision on military issues; this story fits with my beliefs.
Neocons seem to want to stick around and run things too much.
When it comes to the military they only need a clear objective and the tools to accomplish it.

Open ended missions cost too much in blood and treasure. If you don’t know how you’re going to get out, you shouldn’t be there.
Its also worth looking at who is benefitting from these adventures. People pushing for extended commitments usually have a self-interested reason for doing so.
