GOP senators float DACA fix to rescue stalled House border-wall bill (Flake)

Some Senate Republicans are proposing a reauthorization of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in a last-ditch attempt to rescue funding for President Trump’s border wall.

As a motion to proceed to the House-passed measure providing $5.7 billion for the border wall stalled on the Senate floor, some Republicans proposed at a private lunch meeting to add protections for undocumented immigrants in order to pick up Democratic support.

“I don’t see any reason to proceed to a bill that can’t pass,” said Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), a Republican who voted against a motion to proceed to the House bill, which keeps 25 percent of government funded until Feb. 8.

Flake said he wants to “find a bill that can pass.”

“I think one that could — if we’re going to reopen this thing to add more money for a wall or steel slats, or whatever you want to call it, then throw DACA in too,” Flake said, adding that several colleagues support his position.

Senate Republicans convened a meeting in the Mansfield Room while the motion to proceed to the House bill sat stalled on the Senate floor.

Flake can have amnesty.

We can promise he won’t be counted among the traitors... at least not for this.

He called their bluff.

He knew they wouldn’t go for it.

If they fund the entire wall, I can live with DACA. Nothing will change from the DACA side and we get the money for the wall. In the end it is a fair trade.

It is against the law to discriminate based on sex, age, national origin, religion and a host of other factors. So, how come the federal government doesn’t have low cost housing near Old Joe Biden or Coke head Chris Coons or wife beating Tom Carper?

No deal.

Shut down the Government until Congress agrees to fund the wall - and other harsher border enforcements as well, like an armed Division patrolling the border.

That ought to take about two or three years. We would be better off in the mean time as well.

DACA is the ultimate defeat of the Republic. It would effectively give citizenship to 30 million illegals over night (don’t by the phony 12 million number). Add in every granny, uncle and cousin flooding in from Latin America, India, West/East Africa and Indo-China, and the ball game is up.

It doesn’t matter. We don’t have the votes. If we don’t compromise, Dems will block the legislation is both chambers, and that will be it. Then Trump will get nothing, and they may win.

I don’t want Trump to compromise he did enough of that last time and got zilch. He either gets the 5 billion in full with no strings attached or veto it, let the government shut down and let the Demos squeel. Trump will get nothing anyway. The dems are not going to allow another foot of wall to go up. Even if they did it’d be for something to create much larger damage to this nation (DACA). I’m sick and tired of us having to bend over, grab our ankles, no lube, and told by leadership “ see how we compromise?” More like surrender.

Obama was more than willing to shut down the government and even get Obamacare without ever giving an inch. Our Congress could learn well by his tactics. Even though I despised him Obama stuck to his guns and got what he wanted
