Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) announced Monday he will not seek re-election in 2020.
....
I will not be a candidate for re-election to the United States Senate in 2020, Alexander said in a statement. The people of Tennessee have been very generous, electing me to serve more combined years as Governor and Senator than anyone else from our state. I am deeply grateful, but now it is time for someone else to have that privilege. I have gotten up every day thinking that I could help make our state and country a little better, and gone to bed most nights thinking that I have.
The longtime lawmaker said he will serve out the remainder of his term. The 78-year-old Alexander, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2003 and currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, is the first senator up for re-election in 2020 to announce their retirement.
Akin to Sen. Bob Corkers (R-TN) retirement, political observers say Alexanders announcement, will send shockwaves throughout Tennessees political scene, according to Tennessean. Possible replacements for the U.S. Senate seat include Rep.-elect Mark Green (R-TN), Gov. Bill Haslam (R), Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) and Knoxville businessman Randy Boyd.
Alexander served as the Governor of Tennessee between 1979 and 1987 and the Secretary of Education under President George H. W. Bush.

Good, another Bush League Republican leaving.
Corker, Hatch, Heller, Flake, McCain are all gone from the ones who voted for the last amnesty attempt.
Graham and Alexander are the ones up in 2020.
Alexander is quitting, now we need to primary out Graham.
Do not be fooled into thinking he has changed.
As soon as he is re-elected, hell be pushing amnesty.
In 2022, we need to get rid of Rubio, Murkowsky and Hoeven.
“Flyin the fake flannel for votes”
Yeah, Alexander has always been a fraud.
“Lamar! who taught Jeb! how to use an exclamation point.”
I always enjoy a good laugh before retiring for the night. Thanks.
” Alexander is a short-termer.”
He should retire immediately. The SOB never saw a tax he didn’t love in his heyday. No telling what he’ll support as a lame duck
I never voted for this RINO and I’ll believe hes finally gone when I don’t see his name on a ballot in 2020..
Yes in a Presidential election year.
I have been gratified by Grahamnesty's recent bouts of showing some spine but have felt that it won't be proved to be for real until he is tested on an amnesty vote. Either (i) Grahamnesty was under the spell of McCain and with McCain's demise the spell is now broken (like King Théoden being under the spell of Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings) and Grahamnesty is now for national sovereignty and secure borders or (ii) he is doing the typical 6 year senatorial cicada metamorphosis from a moderate squish into a conservative as his reelection nears.
“He should retire immediately.”
Most of them sure hate to leave, regardless of how many decades they have been in the Dist. of Corruption. I guess with all the perks, prestige, and increasing their pensions with each additional term served, no wonder so many don’t leave until they are defeated or carried out on a gurney.
“I never voted for this RINO and Ill believe hes finally gone when I dont see his name on a ballot in 2020..”
If we see Alexander don a red plaid shirt next year we’ll know he’s waffling.
He is so humble he has to tell us he has served the longest.
SC voters have already had the chance to primary Linda. Didn’t work. Not as much at stake this time. As for Hugh Hewitt he can be forgiven for supporting Alexander vs. Dole. Mr. Plaid shirt ‘appeared’ conservative while Dole never was.
There’s more. Tennessee is divided into 3 parts. Someone named Bryant couldn’t win. Too conservative. Blackburns win helps. Buckley rule my friends.
No great loss. Another RINO Senator will be gone.
I think he was valedictorian around 1951 at Maryville HS.
He has never had a real job in HIS life.
What, exactly, is his history.
We need to keep a good tally.

Could not find video of him falling off stage while enthusiastically flipping flapjacks...
Hugh is a joke.
Yep. Other than his legal career. Which is what most Senators have under their belts.
The Millionaires Club....isn’t that what the Senate is called?
I believe its (ii).
