Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander announced Monday he will not run for re-election in 2020, saying its time for someone else to have the privilege of representing Tennessee in the Senate.
I will not be a candidate for re-election to the United States Senate in 2020, the 78-year-old Alexander said in a statement.
Alexander, the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, previously served as governor of Tennessee. He also worked as secretary of the Department of Education under then-President George H.W. Bush.
The people of Tennessee have been very generous, electing me to serve more combined years as governor and senator than anyone else from our state, he said. I am deeply grateful, but now it is time for someone else to have that privilege.

Good, another Bush League Republican leaving.
Corker, Hatch, Heller, Flake, McCain are all gone from the ones who voted for the last amnesty attempt.
Graham and Alexander are the ones up in 2020.
Alexander is quitting, now we need to primary out Graham.
Do not be fooled into thinking he has “changed”.
As soon as he is re-elected, he’ll be pushing amnesty.
In 2022, we need to get rid of Rubio, Murkowsky and Hoeven.
He’ll be picking up where flake left off.
Lamar was part of a group that managed to wrest Tennessee from very corrupt Democrat control. He was good for the arguments of 40 years ago. Tennessee needs better and can do better for the issues of today.
There goes another Senate vote to convict Trump. Trump now has 38 solid to acquit, by my count. Great news for TN. Corker gone, now the fake plaid and pickup Lamar. Good times!
That list will increase as We journey on.
I was hoping Ben Sasse would be the first would to declare he wasn’t seeking reelection in 2020.
will the next AZ appointed Senator run for re election or announce pending retirement?
in the House NC Jones & UT Bishop

Do not be fooled into thinking he has changed. As soon as he is re-elected, hell be pushing amnesty."
Linda Grahanesty is safe from being primaried as long as South Carolina has open primaries.
Bye Lamar!
As much as I DISPISE most of these senators if to many of them decide to retire we could lose the senate just as we did the house from to many of them leaving maybe these BASTARDS are doing it deliberately!!!
Lamar will be 79 or 80 in 2020.
He lacks the fire in his belly and knows it.
This year we got rid of corker and got Marsha Blackburn. Maybe there is another good cnservative out there to replace Lamar
Does it really matter anymore? After the successful trial run in California and the almost successful ones in Florida and Georgia, you can guarantee that the Socialists running the Democrat party are working on as many underhanded tricks that they can come up with for 2020. At least those that won’t be immediately deemed as illegal or unconstitutional. Those tricks will need to wait until 2024 or so.
Do I sound cynical? Too f’n bad! Unless something drastic is done, and the Republicans don’t fight back, we might as well prep ourselves for President Kamala “the Ugandan Midget” Harris in 2024, with Corey “I never met a boy I didn’t like” Booker as her running mate. And I mean EVERY Republican, from the far right to the RINOs in the middle.
BS, total unsubstantiated BS
Fake Post
According to the TN state constitution is there a special election or does the governor pick someone to finish the term?
I think Scott DesJarlais probably.
Based on what I've seen, it looks like Indiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina were the three states where the GOP did the best job of holding/increasing control in an off-year election where the party generally did poorly. I may have missed a state or two, but it's hard to complain about what the voters in these states have done in recent years.
He’s not resigning from office, he’s simply not standing for re-election in 2020.
Ahh!
