Chicago has won a legal battle allowing its wasteful amusement tax to be levied on everyday people. Residents who enjoy gaming will now have to pay a 9 percent tax for streaming services they buy through Playstation. They also have to pay this 9 percent tax on other streaming services for entertainment like Netflix, Spotify, and Hulu. The amusement tax is one of multiple examples of government using its ability to pick the pockets of the populace to select winners and losers in the market while paying its bills with money that citizens often do not realize they are spending.
The Windy City originally passed its amusement tax in 2015, not through the democratic process, mind you, but through backdoor bureaucratic means. Elected officials on the Chicago City Council never touched the proposal. Instead, it was passed by diktat through the Chicago Finance Department. Although a higher court may find the tax unconstitutional in the future, it was recently upheld by the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Chicago can’t top California it wants to tax texting, the deeper the gouge the more the money.
So, taxmakers, I mean lawmakers, no longer have to justify a reason for a tax....
Not only a Netflix Tax, but also a texting tax.
Netflix hired Obama and his Admin so we dumped it ,so nope no tax ,LOL
That doesn't seem constitutional, but I'm just an American....
I do love St Elsewhere on Hulu.
Yep, no netflix no tax. never had it, probably never will now.
Subscribe to a VPN. They won’t be able to spy on you to find out if you have Netflix, or anything else. I have my router connected to PrivateInternetAccess so every device on the network is protected.
A VPN is just a good idea.
My VPN PIA is the best $50 I spend every year.
Taxed enough yet?
People will soon be “streaming” out of Chicago.
I wonder how the tax will be collected? I believe it is possible to stream from anonymous sites that by pass the taxable streams.
I consider the whole gambit to be foolishness that will never actually come to fruition
I HAD BETTER NOT HAVE TO PAY ANY TAXES I canceled Netflix when we found out the Obamas was going to work for them also Susan RICE ONE OF THE Obamas criminals work for them..
That seems foolish
You cut off your nose to spite your face
I don’t see it that way..
All this kind of stuff is why I moved from Seattle to central KY. seven years ago. Sure, they have an income tax, but it doesn’t apply to SS at all, and annual property taxes are virtually non-existent.
I agree with you..our’s was cut off many month ago and I think at the time they offered lots then too..My husband told them no we don’t contribute to Obamas salary..We are just as happy there are lots of things to watch instead of NETFLIX..
Netflix has changed dramatically from what it was originally. It appears as though 90% of their content is Netflix Original content, but only 37% of what customers stream is their content. It appears to me to be a recipe for a dramatic loss of subscribers. Some of the original content is good, but the majority IMO is trash not worth the time to watch. They put up new TV Series by the dozens. The vast majority only ever have one season because they suck.
Amazon Prime has gone downhill as well. You used to be able to rent practically any movie you wanted if it wasn’t Prime. Now, many movies don’t even have a rent option. You have to subscribe to a premium channel like HBO to be able to see a movie.
