Author of Ohio's strict abortion bill believes Supreme Court will welcome it 'with open arms'

A bill that would ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected was approved this week by the Ohio Senate, the first step in what the bill's author says is the controversial legislation's path to being welcomed by the U.S. Supreme Court "with open arms."

But many legal experts and women's rights groups say the bill has no chance of surviving in the nation's highest court — even with the shift in the makeup of Supreme Court justices that President Donald Trump's conservative nominations have ushered in.

Ohio's so-called heartbeat bill would ban abortions from the moment a heartbeat is detected in a fetus, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy — before some women even know they are pregnant.

I doubt this will ever get the opportunity to be challenged in the US Supreme Court because Kasich will likely veto it.

There may be enough votes to override the veto. If not, newly elected Governor Mike DeWine has said he will sign such a bill.

If they don’t wait until Kasick is out of office in January, it’s all games to fool their voting fodder.

There should be a law to require “humane” painless abortions, with the baby rendered unconscious by anesthesia — like we do with deathrow inmates.

How could anyone oppose that?

Ahhhh....I completely forgot that Kasich will be gone. The article said the bill passed the state senate. Does that means it still needs to pass the state house before it goes to the governor?

Republicans have a supermajority in the OH legislature.

If Kasich doesn’t sign it, his successor would.

Pray this becomes law and is upheld by SCOTUS!

A very early heartbeat (16 to 22 DAYS) NOT weeks, DAYS!

“The heartbeat has consistently been one of the most recognizable traits of a new life. For decades, scientists have believed that the human heartbeat starts beating in utero at 22 days — usually just at the time a woman can discover she is pregnant. Now, researchers at the University of Oxford have realized that every human being may experience her first heartbeats even earlier. The 2016 study gives day 16 as the time of the first heart beat.”

The law passed the Ohio House. The Senate made two amendments to it and it is now back with the House. They should approve it and send it on to the Gov.

Forgive me. I should write “bill” instead of “law.”

I'm assuming you mean a late term abortion when the child is just about ready to come out of the oven fully baked. What crime would you charge the baby with in order to justify the death penalty?

Just wondering...

Thanks for the info. Since its passage seems inevitable, it likely will get into the court system rather quickly. How far it gets remains to be seen. My guess is it will at least be submitted to SCOTUS but the most you’ll see of the supremes on this one is they decide to uphold the next lower court’s ruling.

I’d rather go the opposite direction - execute the death row folks by tearing them to pieces while still alive and by punching a hole in their skulls and vacuuming their brains out....good enough for a baby...good enough for a depraved killer.....that might get their attention better.
