The old Soviet satire magazine Krokodil showed two robots with shovels digging away while an Intourist guide bragged about superior Russian cybernetics.
After the tour group left, the two `robots’ removed their heads and the two humans inside lit cigarettes & took a break.

Only sometimes! Radio controlled units were used too. I know, a friend had a prototype. I got to operate it! Lots of fun, he worked up to a block away, so he looked like he was independent. Tons of fun when we took him to Tinker AFB!!
