Boy Scouts of America may declare bankruptcy
New York Post ^ | December 12, 2018 | Max Jaeger

The Boy Scouts of America is mulling declaring bankruptcy amid flagging membership and an avalanche of costly sex abuse allegations, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Leaders have hired Chicago law firm Sidley Austin for help in a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, sources told the outlet.

The organization has been fending off lawsuits over alleged abuse, including one filed by four former scouts who called the club a “pedophile magnet” and alleged that they were molested by scoutmaster Waldron Ackerman between 1974 and 1976.

The organization has reportedly lost two-thirds of its members — some 4 million boys — since the 1970s.

They’ve had girls in the Explorers (for older teens through 20) for decades. (Just looked it up - since 1971)

Our son became an Eagle Scout in 2017. Along the way he did some very serious camping a long way from anywhere civilized, and a couple of times overseas at that. Only one mom ever went camping with his troop, and she only once. But at Boy Scout summer camp, they had neither riflery nor archery. But most if not all of his fellow scouts had pocketknives, and two years on he still uses his.

He was Patrol Leader (Troop Leader? Whatever the scout leader of the troop, as opposed to the adult leader, is called) for a year. His Eagle Scout project taught him a lot about doing things himself, and organizing complex tasks. I never did scouting myself beyond Cub Scouts (I think I made Bear, but quit after that), but I thought that even recently it was a great experience for our son. Being a Boy Scout made him a better man.

Well deserved. Like JC Penny, Target, and Dick’s, the BSA has abandoned its values to pander to its enemies. Its enemies could not be won over and its friends left because they had values.

No, they were not forced. In fact, the US Supreme Court rules that as a private organization they could choose their membership standards.

They caved in to popular culture and leftist ideology.

It took 103 year to cave on one thing. In the ensuing five years they caved on Homosexual leaders, then girls in troops, then lowering Eagle standards and probably a couple more.

When you cave once, there’s no standard to hold to so other capitulation is easy.

Then, bankruptcy. Their “Timeless Values” apparently had a short shelf life.

I was a Scoutmaster and held many other leadership positions. I founded a troop. One of my sons is an Eagle.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I grieved when BSA abandoned their standards and we had to leave.

We joined Trail Life USA the very day they became official. January 1 is our troop and their five year anniversary.

Our troop is massively blessed by God. When we started, we had about 15 boys. We now serve 75.

My other son was the first in our state to earn the Trail Life Pinnacle Award, the Freedom Award.

I feel badly for families who remain in BSA, more so today as the organization is in shambles. Back to the original point, they chose their path.

Re the issue of the BSA allowing homosexual Scoutmasters a few years ago: Some Freeper asked, "Just which part of 'I don't want my son going into the woods overnight with homosexuals' do you not understand?"

I was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Explorer Scout for a total of 9 years. My last BSA Scoutmaster was a pedophile who I avoided being alone with. He was canned after too many parents got tired of such antics as him inviting their sons to sit naked in his sauna with him.

Back then, conventional wisdom was that he was a pervert and the boys were victims. Now it's that he was a victim and they were hatemongers.

20 yrs from now, we’ll call them members of The All-Union Marxist Leninist Young Communist League, known mostly as the Komsomol.

Don’t over celebrate, the same people that destroyed the BSA will be gunning for yours soon enough. It only takes a few. Remember PC rules! Those who push PC have a dangerous agenda.

I’m an Eagle Scout, Class of Nov 1963, and this past 10yrs has been very, very sad. I also cherish my years in Scouting in the 50s & early 60s.

The original BSA membership change to allow homosexuals was voted on in secret by a pre-selected group of anonymous voters.

One brilliant aspect of the Trail Life bylaws is that any changes to standards, membership, bylaws and board members must be voted on by the charter organizations, all churches.

They may come after us and try, but the chances of success by a vote of the charter churches is almost impossible.

I hope they go Chapter 7 instead. It’s time to close the book on this organization.

Very poor national leadership in the last 10 years or so.
They destroyed the purpose of the organization.

My son was an Eagle Scout. His two sons will never wear a Boy Scout uniform. That’s already been decided. There are still decent options available.

I was a cub scout mom that spent several years helping my little troop raise money and earn badges and pins. I invested a lot of time and my personal money on the boys to help them grow. I arranged trips, crafts, projects, teaching tools. My boys had fun and learned a lot. My son made lifelong friends.

If you didn’t want a female running the group, did you step up to start your own pack?

I agree, it’s a sad day, one of many in the last 5-6 years for this gang.

No offense, but there’s a big difference between mom’s leading Cub Scouts and women leading Boy Scouts

Shortly after I earned my Eagle Scout award in April 1972, there was a shift in the way various ranks and merit badges were earned. I didn't really like what I was seeing. The Scouts in San Diego were under constant attack by the gays over the camp and pool facilities in Balboa Park. It was maintained by the Scouts, open to the public, but the gays didn't like not having access to the Scouts. They chipped away at the national level to get gays into Scouts. The last straw was changing Boy Scouts into Scouts and admitting girls. That lead to the LDS church dropping Scouts as the primary program for boys in the church. A huge part of the membership left with that withdrawal. It was all self-inflicted. The program as it was in 1970 was just fine. Caving in to the gays and girls made it no longer a suitable program.

My middle son joined at a Catholic church sponsored troop in Mira Mesa. I knew some of the leaders from my employment at PacBell. My son moved so fast that he had earned First Class before the troop managed to schedule a Court of Honor. The scoutmaster suggested he should "slow down" and "mature". Huge mistake. He dropped the Scouts. Academics and the high school band took the place of Scout activity. AP classes (scoring 5 on all exams) and finishing with a 4.33 GPA was a fair trade for dumping Scouts. Off to USMC boot camp, service in Kuwait/Iraq, then home. He has degrees in business and physics now and earns an adequate living as a real estate broker. His Class A CDL provides additional income.

Too bad, they used to be a great, positive influence on the Country.

I could go on for hours about the wonderful experience I had in Scouts...even worked at one of our summer camps after graduating from high school

One little story: when I was in the Navy going through boot camp in San Diego, I was selected by our company commander for a recruit petty officer position. After boot camp, our company commander, Chief Nelson, (amazing I still remember his name from 1965!!) had a little party at his home for the recruit company petty officers, and I asked him how he choose the officers? He told me it was simple, he just checked out the company's personnel records and picked everyone who was active in Scouting. He told me it worked every time...I was named "Out Standing Recruit" in my company...which really didn't translate into anything special. LOL!
