They make beds in inns across the country. They pick oranges in Florida, strawberries in California and vegetables in Ohio. And they have built new subdivisions in Phoenix, Atlanta and Charlotte.
For years, policymakers have talked about shutting off the influx of undocumented workers. But the economy has grown to rely on them.
Ending illegal immigration, say many of those who have studied the issue, could mean that American workers would lose their jobs, companies would close and the economy would contract.

Democrats and the GOP Establishment are the Cheap Labor Express and couldn't care less if Americans starved to death or lived in tent cities?

Our phony ‘elites’ want a servant class. Like in some South
American hellhole where small ‘elites’ live well and everyone else is cheap labor.

They are thousands of landscapers, they control half the construction trades, and it's unlikely to change as we've not yet made it a crime in this country for an illegal to own a business.
The illegal doesn't pay payroll taxes, doesn't pay workman's comp, doesn't provide benefits, and most often, doesn't even bother to pay taxes on the company's income (or grossly understates it.)
They're landlords - after all, illegals renting to illegals avoids awkward questions and you can rent single rooms to entire families that way, violating housing regulations. They might demand deposits - good luck getting it back.
They're human trafficers, providing whores for the randy illegal workers; sleep with another thousand men and maybe I'll have someone bring your mother over before she dies...
It's unlikely to change as we have no willpower to do something about it. We break down at some sniveling sob story about how a father of 5 anchor children is being tossed out of the country and the family becoming homeless.
Surely the same sob stories would apply to the drug dealer, wouldn't it? Their children taken from them when they're tossed into jail?
We've let exceptions become the law, rather than letting juries (and presumably DAs) handle such exceptions. All so we feel better about this one sob story.

Until liberals stop conflating legal immigration with illegal entry there is no talking to them.

“The economy has grown to rely on them” is just NOT an excuse for allowing lawbreaking OR allowing people to live in a dangerous situation where they can be exploited by immigrant gangs. I love how the NYT just glosses over that. Would anyone seriously suggest that lawmakers and law enforcement just looked the other way as The Black Hand took advantage of other Italian, at the time, LEGAL immigrants? Why should it be any different with MS-13 and other ILLEGAL Hispanic? Because democrats need votes and the NY Times writers need gardeners can’t be the answer.

Eight million illegal workers means 30-60 illegal aliens. Implement e-Verify and kick them out of those jobs!!! Then, if an employer hires them, jail the employers!

YOU CAN DEPORT THEM! Remove the ability for them to work, they will not be able to stay. Okay, need to reinforce the no welfare for illegals laws.

Those 8 million WORKING picking oranges and strawberries, and washing dishes in diners and mowing your lawn are not the real problem.
Sorry, but those 8 million are also stealing tax-payer provided benefits that they have no right to.
They ALL need to be deported. ALL OF THEM!

You cannot deport every single illegal immigrant. Doesnt work that way. Just doesnt.
Take away their ability to get tax-payer provided welfare of any kind and they won't be able to live here.
Watch how fast those we can't deport self-deport.
