Actually Jews and Moors were expelled AFTER 1492 as the Alhambra was not taken until 1492. As for fleeing to Puerto Rico. For an expelled Jew fleeing Spain, going to Puerto Rico would have been like a slave escaping from South Carolina and seeking refuge in Tennessee. I lived two blocks from the Jackson Heights Jewish Center. The congregation must be ancient now as most of the Jews lived in one of two coop complexes north and south of Northern Blvd between 88 st and 92 street. Very few Jews lived in the attached one family homes that made up most of the area. Today those
homes are owned by South Americans, Indians, and East Asians with a smattering of Europeans.
