Can We Fix Fake News?
Redoubt News ^ | 12/6/18 | Jim Boyer

Regardless of the arguments attempting to deny the existence of fake news or down play its impact, the truth is that it has infected both journalism and social discourse.

The business of propaganda or creating false news for the purpose of manipulating public opinion is not new. People like Dan Rather have made a career of it, the New York Times built an empire using it and CNN created a worldwide brand, making the use of fake news an accepted format in the process.

~snip~

The first amendment guarantees both free speech and freedom of the press. It is fundamental to the preservation of our republic. In the view of most people who respect our constitution, that freedom must not be tampered with. Subsequently, most of us believe preservation of our constitution must be our mission. So, the idea of restricting or altering that freedom is abhorrent to the majority. But, why shouldn’t it be possible to apply some regulatory measures that can function in the spirit of protecting freedom?

>>I am beyond dubious that the FAKE, or lying, news can ever be stopped.

That hundreds of “journalists” were colluding (rigging) news coverage, talking points, and who would present what questions (and the framing of those questions) at supposed “press conferences” was a huge damning scandal of corruption and if you ask 75% of the public, they know nothing about “Journolist” or the other channels of communication they still use.

Ask the “man on the street” if he knows about the Obama administration paying to put political propaganda into fictional tv programs to promote Obamacare and other agenda items.

Ask the “man on the street” if he knows that the FBI was planting “news items” to give cause to “investigate” (persecute) President Trump.

Ask the “man on the street” if he knows that reporters were sleeping with government figures for news leaks.

the “news” is thoroughly discredited.

Fire the lot of them from the top down (Moonvees et al) and rebuild from basics.

Even Dan Rather keeps trying to become a figure of influence in “new media”. You presented forged letters as an October Surprise in a presidential election, dude. You are a crumb, a faker, a liar, a fraud. You abused the airwaves and refuse to apologize claiming “fake but ACCURATE!”

If shutting down half of the news media outlets can happen then it can be fixed.

The most powerful forms of fake news function via lying by omission. Not sure how you can regulate that away.

"See how a community trains its teachers ...these students are being taught to accept uncritically whatever they are told. Questions are not encouraged."

An interesting topic, that. I wonder why it is so easy for teachers, or professors to convince young people their parents have lied to them all their lives, but as those same students grow older it becomes very hard to convince them they have been deceived by educators.

"... powerful forms of fake news function via lying by omission. Not sure how you can regulate that away." I wouldn't want to regulate it. But I like thinking of ways to expose it.

Once the cable news arrived in the 1990s...the path ahead became cluttered, and open to misinformation efforts. The same can be said for internet news from 15 years ago, and the arrival of social media about ten years ago. In the 1990s, if you counted newspaper-reading time and TV news viewing (with AM radio chatter)....I probably had 8 hours a week of news. Today? It’s getting near almost 20 hours per week. Most of it....is either marginal news (like the newest Kardashian trend), or some CNN-invented misinformation.
