CONSERVATION STATUS: NOT THREATENED.
This is the problem with the EPA: they don’t have to prove a species in endangered to take over land for the federal government.

If the grouse is truly sage, he’ll stay away from the oil drilling equipment.

According to several environmental policy experts, the legal plan to roll back the sage grouse protections would open up more land to drilling via one policy change than other Trump administration moves to date. Got to admire President Trump's efficiency.

Oh no only 1.8 million acres? How will the poor birds survive?
By contrast, I have to survive on only 1/8 of an acre. Goes to show that birds are more important than people. And no environmentalist would be concerned about the sage grouse if we were talking about windmills instead of petroleum.

Of course - Leftists and enviro-nazis will read the headline for what they want it to say - Trump hates endangered (or nearly endangered) species and is preventing the protection of said species.
The reality is - just because nearly 9 million acres would become accessible for exploration and production doesn’t mean that 9 million acres suddenly turns into a barren wasteland. Lest we forget the pipeline areas in Alaska - where animal life flourishes.

Oh please!
Even the Wiki entry shows it as “near threatened”, the next level of some 7 to “least” concern (which probably should be NO concern).

Amazingly, this makes it seem as though the Trump administration is pullng back protections. Actually, Congress blocked a USFW proposal, which had also been rejected by the Dept of Interior. The Trump admin created a smaller proposal.

If this bird roams across nearly 11 million acres, it sure is not endangered. If it only survived in isolated ecological niches, that might be different. But the facts themselves counter the premise.
