The National Football League’s 2018 ad revenue has sharply declined due to the crashing television ratings the league suffered in 2016 and 2017, according to reports.
The NFL’s TV ratings suffered a precipitous loss over the previous two seasons, with the 2016-2017 numbers down 10 percent. TV ad pricing is based on previous ratings periods, and so these declines seriously cut into the ad prices that the league could charge for the 2018 TV season.
Because of the bad numbers from last season, ad revenue fell 19 percent in the first two months of the 2018 season, Bloomberg reported.
“The effects of the lower audiences last year are spilling into this season,” said James Fennessy, chief executive officer of advertising research firm Standard Media Index.
There is a spot of good news for the league’s revenue for next year, though. Thus far this season, with the player protests during the national anthem fading, the TV ratings slide finally stabilized and in some cases have even seen modest gains. So, when it comes time to calculate next year’s ad rates, the NFL will see a small bump in revenue.
Ratings for 2018 are up five percent from last year. But some particular weeks and particular games have still suffered. This year’s Hall of Fame Game and induction ceremony, for instance, fell to lows not seen since the late 1990s.
Good times are not yet back for the NFL... falling ad revenue for 2018 is just one more example of the league’s troubles in real dollars.

Except of course the NFL doesn’t make money on the ads. The networks do. The networks pay the NFL, and all the contracts that have renewed (not the big ones yet) have gone up quite a bit, doubling even. NFL revenue is fine.
Even if the kneeling totally stops and the offenders were to be disciplined (which I highly doubt would EVER happen), they have lost me.

I actually watched a couple of games this season, unlike last year, and they have clearly stepped back from the politics. The same I hear is true of ESPN. “Get Woke Go Broke” is starting to sink in.
Don’t bother to hold your breath on that happening. I certainly will not.

After the baseball players strike I never came back. I’ll not turn away when I see it in a sports bar, and I would occasionally go to Mariners games when people gave me free tickets, but that’s it.
NFL is dead to me now in the same way.

NFL did a two week “Salute the Troops” with coaches in camouflage and players with flags on the uniforms.
The owners know it was a screw up but you’ve got essentially the Koederitz version of Negro Leagues baseball. Defenses are 99% black. Overall 80-% blacks as players.
So they were worried they’d implode the league if control was used. They quietly banned certain players and did the “wear your cause cleat” week. Donated money to BLM to shut up. Jesse Jackson shakedown.
The league exists based on white fans buying the overpriced tickets and gear. White fans as taxpayers backing the $6 billion in corporate welfare it takes to build stadiums. It’s a completely white funded system.
Long range. Look for the physical effects of playing as a kid to result in less and less white players. Lawsuits against colleges and school districts may shut football down there. White taxpayers may not vote to fund the overpaid protestors. Girly men kids will shun such male oriented sporting activities. Short attention span iPad kids don’t want to watch anything for three or four hours. Football will be dead in fifty years.
I am not defending the NFL. However, empty stadiums have been happening for years. The Patriots games are full but the Dolphins/Bills game in Miami looked to be maybe half full this past Sunday. Neither team has a shot at the playoffs.
One of my coworkers was in WI this past weekend. She went to the Packers game. It was 36 degrees snow and rain with 77000 fans in attendance.
The tickets are too expensive for the average fan. $150-200/seat at Gillette Stadium, no thanks. I will stay home and watch it on the big screen with the pellet stove going in my PJs. However, the revenue comes from the TV contracts with Fox/CBS/ABC.
When those go down, so will everything else.
The NFL chose its thugs over law enforcement.
