The Movie was called Caddyshack.
If you are not familiar with this important and predictive movie you may be able to view a few poignant clips on Youtube, and/or, it will probably be on one your cable channels this Saturday afternoon, and every Saturday afternoon after that until the end of time; which is a good thing.
The two main Protagonists are Al Czervik (played by Rodney Dangerfield) and Judge Smails (played by Ted Baxter.)
Al Czervik is a Wealthy-Property-Developer who upsets the status quo with his occasionally boorish, yet mostly harmless behavior, when he somehow manages to get himself ensconced in an exclusive private country club called Bushwood. The Al Czervik character is essentially Donald Trump.
Czervik/Trump has no allegiance to long established members/interests in Bushwood/Washington DC, and is not constrained by traditions in his determination as to whether Bushwood is turned into Condos or the Washington DC swamp is drained.
Judge Smails is a law and order type Judge who wants nothing more than to preserve the vaunted traditions of Bushwood. Although Judge Smails presents the veneer of an unimpeachable character, his public facade is laid bare when his subordinates become the witnesses to his willingness to not play by the rules on his daily excursions on the golf course. Robert Mueller is Judge Smails.
Smails/Mueller singular motivation is to remove Czervik/Trump from Bushwood/Washington DC. Their pursuits are relentless, even if it means breaking the rules. As Judge Smails points out, betting is against the rules at Bushwood, but in the same breath, he agrees to a $100,000 wager. Mueller's underhanded attempts to dangle offers of reduced punishments for process offenses in exchange for testimony that matches his pre-written narrative may or may-not be illegal, nevertheless the willingness to violate the spirit of established rules and decorum severely destroys the willingness of the "non-elite" to comply with any club rule. Lou Loomis (Bryan Doyle Murray) was acutely aware of the betting prohibition at Bushwood, and he gleefully ignored it.
Porterhouse: "Fifty bucks says the Smails kid picks his nose."
Lou: "You're on. Porterhouse."
Caddyshacks themes, sub-plots, and other characters are also reminiscent of current events. Other Notable characters include:
- Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) / Mueller Team Single minded pursuit of minor characters (the groundhog / Corsi, Cohen, Page) through the use of excessive force (high pressure water, C4 / threats of life in prison.)
- Danny Noonan (Michael OKeefe) / George Papodoplous Working Class underling who initially agrees to cooperate with Judge Smails but ultimately rejects the establishment crowd when the Judges underhanded methods reveal he is only being used as a Tool of the Establishment.
- Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) / Roger Stone Establishment Club member with outsider bona fides. Affable and charismatic personality with a hint of mystery allows Ty Webb to travel in the Establishment Circles of Judge Smails and the Nouveae Riche crowd of Al Czervik. His reputation as a loose cannon is superseded by his expert level of competence on the course. Webb/Stone would seal the deal for the Smails/Mueller team if they could get him in their foursome. Despite repeated attempts, first by carrot, then by stick, Webb/Stone willingly turns his back on the Smails/Mueller team given his unique awareness of their corruption and duplicity from having played on the Bushwood golf course with them for so many years.
- Spalding Smails / Peter Strzok I want a hamburger
no cheeseburger. Despite an pedigreed upbringing in Establishment-Circles, Spading/Strozks inability to control his internal thoughts from the publics ears reveal a perverse sense of entitlement, whether ordering a hot dog or hoping for an assassination.
- Mrs. Smails / Washington Elite Privileged and shielded. The Great-Unwashed, beyond the front gates of Bushwood Country Club, exist to cut the lawn of Mrs. Smails. She will occasionally throw the plebeians a bone, such as an invitation to the Christening of a Yacht, in an attempt to placate further ambitions that, if not kept in check, will topple the elite from their ruling positions.

All around impressive comparisons. The Mueller = Smails alone is brilliance. Let it be known I am stealing it for use in twitter convos.

Let me know how he works Lacy Underalls into his roman a clef (maybe Laz can help him with that one).
And by the by, I’ve always thought of Trump as kind of a cross of Al Czervik and Andrew Jackson, with maybe a touch of Cassius Clay thrown in the pot for a little extra bluster.
