ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A 6.6 magnitude earthquake has rocked buildings in Anchorage, prompting people to run out of offices and seek shelter under office desks. The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake was centered about 7 miles north of Alaska's largest city.

It was a scary few minutes in Wasilla. The after shocks themselves were more severe than any other quake I have felt in the past 20 years. We went into emergency mode and started checking on structural integrity which mercifully was nonexistent. Lots of fallen pictures and anything on a elevated flat surface was on the floor. With the power back on now I can run my water but it is very muddy. Hoping that my well casing isn’t busted. Will let it sit for a few days and see if the mud settles out at the bottom.
and possibly in need of a change of underwear!

People can debate all they want about precise meanings of “big” or “huge” in relation to earthquakes, but to ordinary people a quake that severs roadways with gaps large enough for cars to fall in qualifies as pretty big, maybe “huge”.....
Sure, the strongest earthquakes every recorded are much more powerful than 7.2, but then 7.2 is one heck of a lot more powerful than what most of us have ever experienced. I have never felt more than about a 3.0, so by my lights 7.2 with gaps opening in roadways is pretty huge. Big, at least. I don’t really care if others want to quibble..... ;^)
wow, crazy!
So many of these photos have lone cars stranded on newly created traffic islands. Guardian angels putting in overtime today.
I’ve been in two different 6.9s and didn’t find them particularly alarming. Even brick buildings held up, though some facade was lost.
The big gaps in the road must have had contributing factors...erosion etc.
And this quake is finally pegged at 7.0 right?

You can go to the USGS earthquake site and report that you felt it.

As an aside, when I zoomed in to the Anchorage area, it shows 45 total quakes in and around that area for the last day, and two within the last hour. All within about a 15 mile radius of the big one.
Thanks for the link!
The Tectonic Summary at the bottom is very interesting!
